Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

"Two nights ago, Fox News aired the first of two presidential candidate documentaries called 'Character and Conduct.' First up [was] Barack Obama, whose documentary pretends really hard that it's not full of stereotypes and insinuations. Couldn't stomach it Monday evening? We've got it for you in a minute." -- from a video-piece introduction by the 23/6 guys, posted today. [Thanks to Jett, who linked to this today in one of his first postings for The Beef.]

Of course, all this sh*t is made up. Obama is as clean (I didn't say 'clean and articulate') as the wind driven snow. A new kind of pol--one who never accepted favors, made back room deals, made politically expedient decisions, or put his own interests ahead of others.

Except that's not what they were going on about, kid. Instead, they'll push the race, name, and guilt-by-association trips.

But hey, if you have something about back-room deals, or I don't know, anyting of actual substance to go after him on, please share.

I need to ask an honest question, and in no way do I intend for this to come across as rhetorical or sardonic:
Where do you get your news from these days?

I've all but given up completely on broadcast journalism at this point, yet every once in a while I'll hear a fairly intelligent and reasonable viewpoint on this site. Whatever your political leanings, I just want to find anything that remotely resembles comprehensive reporting and isn't catering to a single ideology at the cost of cognitive dissonance.

Wells to shepherd12345: Yes, that's right -- the inspiration was Jett Rink. It was suggested to me by publicist Bruce Feldman, and the instant he said it, I went "yes....that's it!"

Hope you have a lot of time, because your choices are in-depth reporting from a single point of view, which *might* dig up some truths along the way, or bland playing it safe middle of the road sanitized news. So the best bet, I find, is to read a lot of places and form your own opinions and conclusions.

Luckily, I work in an office, so I can spend massive amounts of time on-line. I think the "truth" of the moment is more in the partisan vitriol, as long as you look at both sides'.

Sorry Jack, but I can't help being snarky: I get it from the Internet. But seriously, I don't think there is any one site to get the news from, however, google trends gives a good picture of what's hot.

JP,

Do you have an Ipod? If so, go to Itunes, open the podcast center and subscribe to news reports from Democracy Now, BBC Global News, Bill Moyers. and anything from NPR. The amount of content is staggering, annd after a week of listening to different podcasts and determining what you like, you shouldn't have a problem narrowing the list of favorites down to a select three or four that you really like.

kidkosmic wins the Comedy Post of the Year Award. Either that or he's never heard of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. (Which, to be fair, not many people have. The press has been unsurprisingly incurious on the subject.)

And for the record, McCain isn't clean and pure as the wind driven snow either.

Wow. If that's what liberals get of Fox News, (cutesy, snipped-together montages) then no wonder they think it's non-stop crazy ass right wing...

Oh yeah.... MSNBC just replaced Dan Abrahms with Air America's Rachel Maddow to go back to back with K. Olbermann... THAT'S how you do "fair and balanced"...

Walter, as has been explained before, MSNBC political hosts make no pretense of objectivity, whereas Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity call themselves journalists and indeed brandish the "Fair & Balanced" motto.

Burmashave.... are you high? The Fox News Network logo is "Fair and Balanced", that's all... (one can even assume that it means "balanced" vs. other networks)... and recent studies by non-partisan and even liberal sources have found that when it comes to NEWS... (get it? News? As opposed to commentary? There really is a difference, I promise), Fox is far more balanced than many give it credit for... again, when it comes to NEWS... (just ask Hillary Clinton)...

Bill O'Reilly, (conservative populist, not Republican), and Sean Hannity (right-wing conservative) never pretend to be non-partisan... they aren't journalists they are COMMENTATORS and analysts... (how many freaking times do we have to point that out).... Sean Hannity comes on his radio show and his television show and says "I'm Sean Hannity and I'm a conservative"....

Olbermann STILL publicly claims to not have a strong political bias.. (he often rather weakly points to negative things he reported about Bill Clinton ten years ago as proof, that is, before he felated him on his show last year)...

Finally, O'Rielly and Hannity's shows are packed with guests from the opposite political spectrum, (yeah, I know, O'Reilly bullies them and shouts them down, right, but at least they're on) and Hannity as a freaking co-host who is liberal.... who are Maddow's or Olbermann's co-hosts? Olbermann is too big of a pussy to have anyone on his show that disagrees with him...

Please, Burmashave... you may be wrong on a lot of things but you aren't stupid

I'd say that Hannity plays the liberal. Fox News and related news shows are entertainment, with just as much truth to them as Rice-a-Roni being a San Francisco treat.

It's going to be weird when Rachel Maddow takes to the air today on MSNBC and hoodwinks the nation into thinking she's a conservative. That Jack Welch is a devious motherfucker!
