Rielle Hunter's declaration that "she will not pursue DNA testing to establish the paternity of her 5-month-old daughter" despite former senator John Edwards having offered to participate in such a test is, of course, enormously fortunate for Edwards. The Washington Post's Lois Romano and Howard Kurtz reported this last night.
Today's wrinkle is that Hunter's sister Melissa has told ABC News that "I would challenge" Edwards to take a DNA paternity test because "somebody must stand up and defend my sister...I wish that those involved would refrain from bad-mouthing [her]."

In other news, Rielle Hunter was seen making a very large deposit to the nearest Bank of America branch....

Everytime I think about this guy knowing all this shit possibly coming out while he ran for the nomination, I get absurdly angry. Especially when he used his beatific wife and marriage as a campaign tool while she was sick with cancer. We dodged a major bullet.

It's only fortunate for Edwards if the child is his. If what he says is true about the affair ending in 2006 and there being no way that the child is his, her refusal to do a paternity test is unfortunate for him, because everyone is going to believe that not only is he lying but that he's having her cover from him.

All politicians lie when they close enough to the top. It's not unlike summit fever when climbers risk everything just to make it to the summit even if it means killing themselves on the way back down. Power is an aphrodisiac. This woman, according to Newsweek, was comparing him to Gandhi. What I don't get is why everyone acts so shocked. What would be surprising is if a guy who looked like that was actually faithful to the same woman for that long. Did anyone expect it of Jefferson? Of Kennedy? Of Clinton? Come on.

This is such a lie because why would Edwards go visit his ex-lover and her new baby by another daddy in a Cali hotel? And why wouldn't his wife hadn't shot him upon seeing the reports in the Enquirer.
And if the other guy admitted to the kid, why isn't his name on the birth certificate? This is just a lawyer clinging to the last threads of his denial. Edwards is pretty much dead meat at this point. hopefully it'll end his career of earning $50K a pop lecturing about poverty.

I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but another man could have been the father and she was trying to blackmail him. I don't want to use my jump to conclusions mat, because if he's an even bigger cad than he appears to be then she only deserves sympathy. But then again, if you're going to sleep with a married politician, you need to be ready for the consequences and the 100% chance you'll become another Lewinsky.

Logically, the man who knows he isn't the father due to timing should be all for the paternity test; it's the man who knows he is who benefits from doubt being left open.

Am I the only one reading this as her knowing he's not the father and wanting to draw it out as long as possible? Obviously he's still a scumbag, but it seems like he was willing to go forward with DNA testing.

Burma: If you were Edwards, and you knew you weren't the father, wouldn't you absolutely insist on the test? I would sue her for the results before I let her disappear with a cloud of suspicion still over my head.

It sounds to me like she does not know who is the father of the baby. Could be Edwards, Young or someone else. But she wants it to be Edwards. Also Edwards going to the hotel tells me HE does not know either.

I'm sorry but she's just as much of a scumbag as he is - she knew he was married. Doesn't anyone say no anymore?
I though something was up when Obama's camp wasn't making overtures to Edwards to take the VP spot.
What a shit thing for their younger kids to grow up with - knowing your cancer stricken mother was putting up with dad being a cheating son-of-a-bitch. Nice.

How convenient for Edwards that the mommy won't submit to a paternity test...
If the affair ended in 2006, exactly what was Edwards doing in her hotel room last month?
This story stinks to high heaven...it will be interesting to see how the MSM pursues this, if at all...

The only thing that's missing from this story is a report that Rielle Hunter was a modern-day political Plastercaster. That would make it perfect.

What's now interesting is that Edwards, by apparently setting the stage for Rielle's denial, wants the mainstream media to look the other way yet again.
