Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Carr Tube

Night of the Gun author and N.Y. Times guy David Carr paid a visit to MSNBC's "Morning Joe" this morning to talk about his account of his turbulent druggy past. Asked how his confession of substance abuse in the '80s squared with his present-tense employment with the straight-laced New York Times, Carr said his history was never "about journalistic malfeasance or professional degradation...I'm not one for missing deadlines or screwing up assignments." Here, again, is my 7.19 piece on Carr's book.

Drug use may not have anything to "professional degradation" but if he tried to write about politics instead of movies it would be immediate grounds to dismiss anything he said.

If what he was saying was at all liberal, of course.

Yeah, I think you sort of broke the mold on boring, George Prager. There is nothing boring about David Carr. Good interview, good book, nice guy.

Now, now, Zimmergirl. I know not your George Prager, and he may well be boring, but I'm also guessing he is A Man Who Has Been There, and is chiefly miffed that Carr's book isn't Confessions of an Opium Eater or The Naked Lunch. Which it surely is not. Personally, I'm a big fan of Chris Lawford's confessional. A fine redemption tale for PLU.
