Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Count On It

WhateverPineapple Express winds up making between today and Sunday night, it's certain to benefit from good word because of that first 80%. (The finale doesn't mess it up exactly -- it just makes you wonder why they felt they needed to go that way.) Fantasy Moguls' Steve Mason says it'll earn $35 million; I'm hearing more like $33 or $34 million.

I really think Obama said "appreciatious" at the end of that video.

This is just getting silly now. Not sure why I was banned AGAIN ... was it because I pointed out that I once pointed out to you that you're not a scientist? Or disclosed to your readers that you drive an extremely pollutive car? Or maybe it was stating that reactionary extremists like you hurt the legitimacy of your cause?

If I call you crusty, old, fat, ugly, or even paunchy, go ahead, ban me, but don't ban me because you don't like my ideas. Whadaya say, Che?

What does this make this, FIVE times now? Want to go for double jeopardy where the scores can really change?

Are you hearing it from the same places that had you saying DARK KNIGHT would only make like $90-120M?

I'm not hearing it from anywhere - Me, MYSELF is thinking it will be closer to $37-40M for the 5 day frame.

Every comedy so far this summer has disappointed. People are overdue

supertaster - I feel you. Just have to accept that the site's owner is like that kid in grade school who would take his kickball home when things didn't go his way. There's no telling what is going under the thin skin the next time.

can't wait to see this tomorrow; going first show. as much as I want a big-budget pro-pot movie to be a box office success, does everyone really think that this film is going to open in the mid to high 30 millions? I don't. I see it opening in the low 20's tops. I will probably be wrong but I don't get the sense that people know much about this film, outside of the internet crowd and movie buffs. the tv ads don't clue you into the weed angle and it's just a fat and sloppy Seth Rogen running around with a gun. again, I am PUMPED to see this film; I just don't think it's going to have massive widespread appeal.

Tropic Thunder, on the other hand, is going to be gigantic I think...

supertaster's comment was supposed to be in that Obama video thing, I think.

Phreek: It probably will do somewhere between Step Bros. and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, as Apatow's rate of return keeps diminishing.

This is another Rogen/Apatow R-rated comedy, which have been consistently opening over $30M.

It was all stoner kids and high schoolers, but the crowds at midnight were HUGE. You never know, but this might be bigger than expected even. As for the film itself, I'm somwhere between pfttttt and ehhhhh. MIDNIGHT RUN and 48 HOURS are safe. It was good though. Especially said first 80%

I'm predicting about $38 to $40 mil. I'd say that's pretty fair for the 5 day take, and I think word of mouth on this thing is going to be big.

I know someone who got banned for saying Jeff looked chubby in a picture at a pizza parlor.

They changed up the TV ad so that it now focuses on Seth Rogen and his girlfriend - guess they want to sell this as a date movie.

HE is like a cool party at Jeff's house. Sadly, it seems as if some losers have decided to show up uninvited and unwanted and now they're spoiling all the good vibes -- messing with the mojo. Jeff, kick all these fuckers out and let's get this shit back on track.

oh, and I take back every shitty comment I ever made about James Franco. The dude should get an oscar nom for his work in this film. He won't, of course, but he should. David Gordon Green is going to have two movies on my top of the year list at this point.

This will be a very bad year then. It was a solid plus, but come on. SNOW ANGELS was challenging but rich, I could stomach that, but if you are seriously calling PINEAPPLE one of the top of year... well, between you and Devin's 9.5/10, this movie is being severely overrated.

Should say B plus, or B+ actually. And obviously agreed on Franco.

I loved it from the get-go. It was exactly what I wanted to watch. It wasn't life changing or anything but it was extremely enjoyable and very, very entertaining. I loved the action-violence; very surprising level of gore and squib action. The retro feel to Green's direction and editing was fun as well. The opening bit in B&W was totally unexpected and quite inspired. I haven't laughed at any movie this year the way I laughed today while watching Pineapple. Even my fiancee, who never smokes, thought it was funny. And this film was CLEARLY built for stoners. Clearly.

Loved the opening scene through Rogen's high school adventure. Classic confrontation with the teacher.

Loved any scene with Danny McBride - dude is classic.

Thought the violence and the last 20 minutes was pretty lame. Poorly shot and kind of boring actually. Rosie Perez hit the wall HARD. And the asians were annoying.

But the last scene in the diner is GOLD. Funniest line of the year "falling asleep like the nerd at the sleepover"

Pretty much agreed with everything BERKGURU just said. Danny McBride was also terrific. James Franco is amazing. The last 20 minutes were pretty funny, just unecessary and too long. I sort of looked at it like a GRINDHOUSE sort of action scene and it worked for me.

Probably my favorite Apataw vehicle...
