Watching these John McCain spots produces feelings of slap-shock, numbness, amazement. The irony is that the comical pandering will probably connect with some of the older PUMA types out there, no matter what Hillary Clinton says at the Denver podium (which we all suspect will be one thing verbally and quite another thing in terms of delivery and passion). "She won millions of votes but isn't on his ticket. Why? For speaking the truth. On his plans. On the Rezko scandal. On his attacks. The truth hurt and Obama didn't like it."

So what are we to draw from this ad? Is McCain willing to put her on his ticket? She DID support Goldwater in '64, after all...
What a bone-headed spot; I'd fire the agency that put it together.

I've got a sneaking suspicion the Democratic Convention this week will be one long pander: Vote for Obama and he'll give you a $1000 credit to help you pay your gas! Vote for Obama and he'll pay for your healthcare! Vote for Obama and he'll send your kids to a fance preschool! Vote for Obama and all your dreams for come true! Don't worry about how we'll pay for it... we'll take the money from some rich guys and hopefully won't blow up the economy in the process.

What is this huge boner that you have for Palin, Balthazar. Give the woman a break, she's got five kids including a newborn with Down's Syndrome.
And then there's this:
Questions have arisen over whether Palin used her office to try and fire her ex brother-in-law from a state trooper's position. Palin asserts the charge is untrue but the Alaska Senate this week approved the hiring of an independent investigator to look into the charges.

This ad is very smart (if equally cynical) on McCain's part, but it only works because of the bitter anger still eminating from Clinton's camp and supporters. What is it they say about a woman scorned?

If Obama loses, Hillary is the de facto "told you so" future of the Party.

Nah; the Clintons are the Old Democrats. Obama is a New Democrat. If the New Democrats take over, the Old Democrats lose power. But if the New Democrat fails to take over, all the power goes back to the Old Democrats, who then say, "See? We told you not to listen to that guy."
(I don't mean to limit it to Democrats; Republicans do the same thing.)

If there were substantive disagreement on policy (get outta Vietnam, pro-life/pro-choice) then HRC would have something to hang her hat on. Absent that, a convention blow-up will be perceived as the product of her ambition. Old Democrats may have backed her in the recent past, but there will be candidates less encumbered in 2012; candidates that won't be DOA with the black community or progressives for example.

So, McCain's campaign releases an ad saying that Obama has bad judgement since he picked Biden for his VP since Biden made some unsavory remarks toward him during the primaries, and then puts out another ad saying that he didn't pick Hillary because of the harsh words she had for him in the primaries.
Which one is it?

The Old Guard always hang their hat on experience. (The New Guard always hang their hat on change -- that's how you can tell them apart.)
"but there will be candidates less encumbered in 2012"
Sure; there'll be a New Guard candidate all the students get behind, for one. But, if Obama loses, the Old Guard will be reinforced within the Democrats. Maybe that won't lead to Hillary in 2012 -- but they'll have the power to pick who it will be instead.

Barack Obama says that he's tough on crime. But what he won't tell you is that in 1968, he was involved in a chainsaw massacre.

I'm gonna ask again: Can ANYONE explain to me how it is that of the two guys running the 72 year-old Republican is the one with the funny/edgy campaign spots? The McCain camp is turning out a mini Daily Show and Obama is doing fracking live-action NPR. This guy was supposed to be the Black JFK, why is he so willing to let McCain be the "hip" one?
IF Obama loses, it'll be Hillary in 2012. Hell, the promise of an uncontested bid was probably the price for her "withdrawal." The old guard will all want to keep their jobs, so Obama's failure will be blamed on letting "the kids" (college students, MoveOn/Kos zealots, etc) "wrest control" of the party from them, and the Revenge of The Clintons will be framed as "back to business with the grownups." This spin will work, because it has the novelty of being true.
Black voters will, of course, be bitter about it. But the sad reality is... that doesn't count for much. Blacks are 10% of the population, and of that 10% not a whole lot of them are reliably regular voters, statistically speaking. It's nice to imagine that Obama's ascension represents Black Democrats getting-it-together and showing some muscle, but the numbers don't bear it out. If you could actually do hard math on the matter, would it REALLY surprise anyone if you found out that blacks who voted for Obama out of genuine excitement at the advancement of the community were VASTLY outnumbered by whites who voted for him so that they could feel racially progressive about themselves?

It may or may not be true, but it *always* works. That's exactly how Nixon got control of the Republicans in '68.
