HE reader Nick Zayas informs that Hulu just put up Joseph Sargent's The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3. The whole thing, in other words, is now free and streamable in reasonably decent quality. With "limited commercial interruption," of course.

The new Tony Scott version with Denzel Washington (in the Walter Matthau role) and John Travolta ("as" Robert Shaw and another villain) won't be out until 7.31.09.

Not sure if Travolta is the best choice for the villain. He just can't convey the same degree of intensity as Robert Shaw. Washington will be great as always though, so I'm still looking forward to this.

What I loved about Shaw in the original: He looked as though he could hijack a subway through the simple expedient of picking it up and walking off with it.

Denzel Washington and John Travolta in a remake of a really good movie... how boring can you possibly get? It could only be worse if was Ridley instead of Tony.

Is it me or does Denzel look exactly like Spike Lee?

And let's not forget this is the SECOND remake: Edward James Olmos and Lorraine Bracco starred in the first one. Why can't they leave well enough alone? And am I the only one who's tired of seeing Denzel as a dogged cop pursuing a psychotic criminal? Can't he do anything else now?

I will not see this film. I will not acknowledge its existence. If I'm in a theater and the trailer comes on, I'll close my eyes and go "La la la". The original rules and always will.

That's some good quality video on Hulu. I watched the first 10 min. of Pelham and 10 or so minutes of the also great Kagemusha. Hulu has a pretty eclectic library of films.

Curious as to why Denzel's character in INSIDE MAN hasn't been turned into a franchise.

"John Travolta ("as" Robert Shaw and another villain) "
I would love it if this meant that John Travolta were playing two characters in this movie, but I'm sure you mean that they're combining two villains into one uber-villain for Travolta to play.
As for Travola-as-villain - boring.

Though, while we're on the subject of Travolta...
I'm sure nobody here is going to ever want to sit through 'Wild Hogs', and lord knows I would never even suggest that anybody should.
But, if, for whatever reason, a person were to do so, they would be -- 'treated' is the closest word I can think of -- treated to the strangest performance Travolta has ever given.
But that doesn't really do it justice. This would rank among the strangest performances Vincent D'Onofrio had ever given. It's not that it's mannered, in some method-y way... I can't even think of what to compare it to. It was a truly fascinating performance to watch -- the movie is terrible, TERRIBLE, but he elevates the movie in a way that I can only compare to Walken.
Seriously, I would almost recommend watching the movie just to see him in it, except that everybody and -thing else about the movie is complete garbage. Even Macy is terrible in it, and I didn't think that was possible.

I'm interested to see what Travolta does in the remake...in some of the set photos, it looks like he's sporting his "own" hairline (i.e. not much), which could mean he's doing a gritty, vanity-free kind of thing.

I'm just waiting for kids my age to claim that the whole "criminals named after colors" bit is ripped from Reservoir Dogs...

What I loved about Shaw in the original was that he was such a coldass motherfucker that you could believe his death scene.

I think they're not doing the colors this time for that very reason. Also the original has become one of my three or four favorite films of all time. And that kickass music, which has been discussed at length here...

He DOES look like Spike. That's weird.
I was wondering how he was going to differentiate this character from the one in Inside Man, which is a similar story. This photo at least partially answers that.
Of course, I'm opposed on principle. But remakes happen. May as well hope for the best and expect the worst.

P Vice: Me too. I just saw the original and honestly, what more can they bring to the story? We know how it ends....and isn't this Denzel's like 3rd remake of a movie? Is he running out of material?
