Discland

Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Int'l Che Trailer

Rope of Silicon's Brad Brevet calls this international trailer for Steven Soderbergh's Che: El Argentino a "high quality" thing...really? It looks muddy to me. It doesn't even look decent. What's the deal with the materials on this film, Wild Bunch? Trying to shave costs?

Please take notice of the train-going-off-the-track shot. It's a quick one, but it's not CGI -- it's a real, full-sized train really going off the rails. I asked Soderbergh at the Che press conference in Cannes if this is the first train-wipeout shot using verite footage since John Frankenheimer's The Train ('64). Whatever the truth, he didn't want to get into it. He went "no, no, no, no...I don't know."

That trailer isn't even "decent", I've seen better pulled from a phone...

I can't wait to see it, by the way...no matter how it's cut or distributed...

I am sick of those fade ito black- fade in/out stylistics in trailers.

I buy the epic scale thing but...

not sure about a trailer that starts with a guy making a speech...

and overall, I'm sure getting a simplistic-glorification vibe here. All it lacks is a black kid from the slums who he teaches to be a writer, or maybe all the prisoners clapping for him. Is this really Mr. Guevara's Opus like they're making it look, or is there some Godfather-level (or even Reds-level) complexity and ambiguity to the portrait, even if generally favorable (which I wouldn't agree with but at least could find dramatically worthwhile).

Was a full size train crashed into a bus for The Fugitive? It's been a while since I watched the specials on the DVD.

I think we need to remember that The Argentine represents the pride before the fall. This is about Che's one big victory.

I think this looks fucking amazing, getting a real BATTLE OF ALGIERS vibe.

Oh and to save everyone some time:

"CHE I EVIL, EVIIIIIILLLL!"
"Liberals are dumb for worshipping a man who PERSONALLY HAD PEOPLE KILLED...GASP!!!"
"Did I mention CHE is evil?"
"oh and so is Castro."

Does that cover it?

The quality is piss-poor; Wild Bunch (or whoever) should be ashamed of themselves. And Soderbergh should be complaining.

The film, however, looks fucking incredible. The train flip is mucho impressive. Del Toro looks like he's on fire.

Thank you, Victor, for making an intelligent discussion of the film less possible.

Well, now I'm intrigued after hearing all the bad talk about it. It definitely has an epic feel like "The Godfather" or "Reds" and maybe a touch of "The Leopard", too. I do want to see it and hope it's good and hope it gives both sides of the aisle something really to sink our teeth into. As a dedicated Soderbergh fan I'm going to see this no matter what, so I'm easily sold.

MGMAX: I didn't actually aim that post at you. I'm all for discussing the film (especially after I've seen it), but you have to admit that Che post comments sound like broken records.

O.G. Considering it was a multi-Oscar nominee, I'm surprised Wells forgot about the full size train crash in The Fugitive.

VictorLazloThank you for that first chuckle of the morning (with the assist from Mgmax), who was just pissed that you stole his usual, strident thunder.

Was anyone else waiting for the interstitial title A Film By Billy Walsh and the film to be Medellin instead?

Yeah, C-Phreek, your psychoanalysis totally nailed it. I'm just sitting here boiling, waiting for O'Reilly to come on and issue me my talking points for the day.

Mgmax - in order to sell that, you pretty much were limited to doing nothing. But unable to help yourself, you have become as easily tauntable as D.Z. Instead of Tarantino, you have your own little triggers.

At least Mgmax isn't taunting the Soviets by funding the Taliban.

I once had sex with Alex Trebek. Well, actually, it was with a cousin of Alex Trebek. It was my first week in the new high school and I didn't know any of the kids and I didn't realize that no one my age collected Pogs any more so the first day I arrive I had a Snoopy lunchbox full of Pogs and the other kids just laughed and called me names like "Pogbutt" and "Pogdick" and "Evelyn Paugh." No actually I made that one up. But it left me feeling vulnerable for the first relative of a game show host to come along to take advantage of me.
