Bruce Eder has written a perfunctory career-review piece about Miklos Rosza for Films in Review, dated 8.21. But it's a much better thing to simply listen to any one of Rosza's better compositions. Like this one. There's a very serene mood that seeps in towards the end, getting quieter and quieter over the last minute or so. Old-school composers were expected to keep the fanfare loud and brassy for films of this type; only artists like Rosza had the cojones to go the other way.

My own personal favorites:
Golden Voyage Of Sinbad - they gave hin what sounded like a 15 piece orchestra...and he still
delivered a brilliant, epic score....the music for the
battle with Kali - just wondrous.
And I've mentioned this before: After you've seen the Rosza-scored main titles of "The Power"
(which includes an actual shot of one of his
musicians playing that harp-xylophone hybrid)
you've seen the best part of the movie.
Must stunning listening experience: the
waltz from "Madame Bovary" , starting with a
melodious lilting whirl and finishing in wild full
orchestral frenzy.
And while we're on composers...of the
many grievous, embarrassing gaffes and oversights of the Motion Picture Academy....
....their complete failure to honor the passing
and achievements of the composers like
Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein and Rosza.

All three won Oscars. That's as good as it gets from the Academy, that and your mug in the annual roll call of the dead, which favors the more boldfaced names in the public eye.
I lot of what FSM covers is diamonds in the rough, but the definition varies from taste to taste.

So who was saying that The House Bunny would be Faris' breakout role again? http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2008-08-22&p=.htm
It's doing worse than Legally Blonde, adjusted and unadjusted for inflation. I'll concede Richardson was right about it making more than $10 million, but not much more. And he was telling me that Reese was more of a nobody than Faris, too!

I'll never tire of how D.Z. treats this comments section as his own personal blog. Wait a minute, "tire" is not the right word. It should be "not feel murderous rage."

DZ, I'll bite: LEGALLY BLONDE was released in July, not in the dump period of late August, and while obviously not a movie star yet, Witherspoon had already appeared in CRUEL INTENTIONS and ELECTION. I understand they share a writer but these are not comparable releases. I would say taking number 1 for the weekend over DEATH RACE and TROPIC would be appropriately breakout for Faris. It's a shame Goldie Hawn's daughter is taking all the Goldie Hawn roles these days, because Faris would be perfect for them. The secret to her success is going to be: women love her, at least the ones I know personally, and we all think she's adorable. Ugh now I feel dirty. 'Less Was More' is a great title for another thread that you've hijacked.

The comparison is also inapt because Elle was fundamentally a bright girl who expressed herself in non-conformist ways, whereas Shelley is just an utter moron who only cares about "hot" and "sexy."
