Man Enough?

Anton Yelchin as Chekhov in JJ Abrams' Star Trek flick (which comes out next May)? Okay, I guess so, whatever, but I've never gotten a vibe from Yelchin that was about anything except light-hearted whimsy or puppy-dog sadness. He's like a little kitten with a bowl of skim milk. The other Star Trek character posters, first revealed at ComicCon, feature the vaguely pudgy-faced Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Cho as Sulu and Karl Urban as McCoy.

Bottle Shock's Chris Pine is Kirk, of course, and Zachary Quinto is Spock. Eric Bana, Zoe Saldana and Winona Ryder costar.

Delayed until next May? That makes me nervous....that's a looooooong post production.

In the meantime...Yelchin is playing young Kyle Reese? I was cool with every part of the Terminator time travel paradoxes but I must admit, I never understood the Kyle Reese stuff. The time travel has to start SOMEWHERE and how can Connor send Reese back in time if he never impregnated Sarah Connor in the first place....?

Yeah seriously, Yelchin as Reese? That's just horrible! And these posters aren't much good either. Will 98% of moviegoers casually glancing at them in a theatre have the slightest clue what these are supposed to be? The Spock one will probably get some recognition, but who out there is going to get that these are supposed to be "new" versions of old characters, or that this is even Star Trek, etc? It just seems like a pointless ad campaign all round.

To be fair, Chekov was never exactly the most masculine of the original cast. By Roddenberry's edict, he even wore a wig so he would more closely resemble Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees.

I'm puzzled that they're spending so much time emphasizing characters outside the "Big 3." Exploring the peripheral characters is fine in a TV series, or even a series of movies. But the first two hours needs to establish the basic id-ego-superego dynamic that made the series so popular. Are they really going to spend 20 minutes apiece developing Scotty, Uhura, Chekov and Sulu's back stories? If so, it will be a long slog.

Playing a Navy SEAL in three different movies probably didn't do him much good. Once he got typecast as "military dude," that was pretty much it.

Stuff like Rampage, Jade and Deadfall didn't help, either (though I love the latter just for its "Nicholas Cage misfiring on all cylinders" performance.)

The only way this Star Trek thing is gonna work is if it has deliberately bad effects, foam rubber rocks and green, antennaed go-go dancers. If they try to make it "gritty," it will completely suck.

Yelchin strikes me as good casting. Was Chekov some sort of manly stud/hero and I missed it?

The bit of casting that fills me with dread is John Cho. Nothing against the man, but why did they cast a Chinese-American actor to assay a Japanese-American role? Much was made of Sulu's ancestry, to say nothing of George Takel's. I still maintain to this day that the casting of all those Chinese actors in MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA was part of what sunk it. The look and the energy were just....off.

It does seem wierd that this film will feature characters that should vary in age and stations in their careers all together in one place at this time before their tour together on the Enterprise.

(Shouldn't Spock be on the Enterprise with Capt. Christopher Pike while Kirk is first officer on another Starship while McCoy is practicing medicine on some farming planet while Scotty is working for a new warp engine design while the youngersters are at the Academy? Again, I'm not proud of what I spend much of my time thinking about.)

Keep in mind, they were arguably the highest profile film shooting during the writers guild strike and, on top of that, the director is a member of the WGA who was outspoken in his wholehearted support of the strike.

So, for a variety of reasons, the movie was not legally able to be re-written as it was being shot to accomodate what was shot. In light of that, I'm not surprised they need a little more post-production to polish everything.

Anybody else seriously suspect that Captain Kirk is not a timeless character that can be passed around a la James Bond, but was only great (to the extent that he's great at all) because Shatner embodied the character perfectly? 'Cause I do.

Shatner, like Charlton Heston, is one of those actors who you can't decide if they're great or terrible, but it doesn't matter because they burn with a 1000-watt intensity either way, and that's what lights up the screen. (Some might argue that Tom Cruise belongs in that group, too.)

The main reason all the later Treks have been borderline somnolent is because they don't have Shatner chewing scenery by the gross ton at the center. The first Trek was all bright primary colors, the later ones are all beige and burgundy.

But this next batch of 2nd tier guys is pretty bad. The worst is Pegg, as much as I am a fan of Spaced and SHAUN, Scotty is a robust Scotsman from Orkney, not a dweeb from Edinburgh.

Shows the usual lack of balls over at Paramount, who must have been nervous about a cast of young unknowns and obviously insisted "Well, if we can't have Shia for Spock, can you put that Chinese guy from HAROLD & KUMAR as Sulu? "Aw c'mon, INSURRECTION is special in a really goofy way."

Riiight. . . evil interestellar plastic-surgery addicts led by F. Murray Abraham. Riiiight.

I'm still astounded that thing got greenlit. After First Contact, I thought, "Hey, this Star Trek thing might actually have legs." But Insurrection killed it, and then Nemesis buried it (that movie is such a top-to-bottom remake of Wrath of Khan, Nick Meyer should have sued John Logan for plagiarism).

Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic about this. No reason for that, but hey, it could be fun. As long as they do some sop to explain how they ret-con everything (especially the "everybody knows everybody already while they're young" bit, which is stupid/lazy on paper). (I still don't get how Nimoy is in this-- is it a reboot? A time-travel story? The past changed somehow so the future is different?).
Of course, that "troika" at the top is what is going to hold it together-- I can buy Qunito as Spock, Chris Pike has big shoes to fill, but the real outlier is Urban-- decent actor, but Bones needs to be the perfect foil for both, and I've never seen Urban display that kind of charisma (maybe less the Georgia country doctor and more the Southern cavalier/cad? But that'd step on the Kirk-is-the-biggest-alpha-male-in-the-galaxy vibe. . . )

Oh, and the feh with you all-- Simon Pegg as Scotty is brilliant. It's the *character* that counts, and Pegg has got it.

The problem is they decided to half-ass this thing instead of either trying for a re-tooling (ala Galactica) or finding an entire cast that embodied the essences of the original cast. Why only go with a few that actually resemble their earlier counterparts instead of every one? It's the SUPERMAN RETURNS mess all over again.

Think Thread has his definitions of character mixed up, because the bottom line is that the chief engineer is the leader of his department and Pegg is just not that guy. He didn't need to be a old school man like James Doohan. Quiet, thoughtful LaVar Burton gave off a leadership vibe that was more like a nurturing camp counselor yet you can still see people would follow him.

Will be interesting to see how Abrams and Co. made this concept work. Seems they only have two choices: first voyage under Kirk (which makes the choices of Pine and Quinto too young) or some sort intersecting stories structure with them only coming together at the very end (with Kirk and McCoy off adventuring together while Spock serves under Pike with the rest).

PS - And the nerds ate cheerleader pussy during the carnival, so what's you're point?

As someone said above, the problem with the posters is that the characters just aren't that iconic. Spock is recognizable, because he's Spock. If I didn't know about this movie already I'd never guess Pegg is Scotty or Pine is Kirk...maybe Uhura and Sulu are obvious once you've figured out the context.

Beyond that, I don't see what these posters say except "It's Star Trek! With unrecognizable people!" And maybe that's what they're going for but only a super nerd is gonna grab these and hang em on the wall like, say, that first poster of Anakin Skywalker with Vader's shadow on the wall...

An iconic shot of the new Enterprise under construction, like in the teaser, would have been more gripping and more indicative of what's coming, IMHO.

Also, it would probably be great for having some sort of "viewer". You could have a list of documents, and use jQuery to get JSON data, then put the data into the template. Something like viewing invoices or other formatted docs.

Just to be picky too, according to w3schools.com, the "value" tag is deprecated? But I guess it is still technically valid. I like to be "valid" when I can :)
