Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Paris '36

The French-language trailer for Christophe Barratier's Paris 36 (known in France as Faubourg 36) tells you it's an "audience film" -- broad, good natured, a little bit square and perhaps Amelie-like. Which is totally fine. Variety reported yesterday that Sony Pictures Classics has acquired distrib rights to the film in the U.S., Scandanavia and "Australasia," which is located to the northeast of Freedonia, the country featured in the Marx Bros. film Duck Soup. Barratier's film opens in France on 9.24.

That's actually very funny.

Heh. Australasia is actually the term for Australia, New Zealand, PNG and a bunch of the Pacific islands. It doesn't really get used that much down here at all, but it's an easy term to use to cover the region.

OK, back in my shell.

I don't get a lot of Amelie off that trailer. Mrs Henderson Presents, yes, but no Jeunet vibe to speak of.

I feel like it'd be cooler to not explain Freedonia. We need to feel good about our little club.

Looks interesting and makes me wish I had used my two years of college French. I actually used a lightboard like the one in the still. It was a theatre in a converted barn; an all wood firetrap, the light booth was a miniscule platform above stage right. Got a great spark everytime you turned a light on. Scary fun.
