Screen Daily's Lee Marshall has strongly praised Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain at the Venice Film Festival, and the Telegraph's David Gritten has written that "only three days into the festival, a front-runner for the Golden Lion best film award has emerged."

Variety's Derek Elley, on other other hand, has given the "spaghetti-structured" drama the old back-hand, calling it "an elaborate writing exercise with few emotional hooks." But I don't trust Elley due to his belief that Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Amores perros, 21 Grams and Babel -- all based on Arriaga scripts -- were "hit and miss."

He's absolutely right -- AP, 21G and Babel *are* hit-and-miss. Amores is the best of the 3, but what he's saying about the new one is completely believable from my POV.

You heard it here first, folks -- this is going to be the movie that Jeff harps on for months as brilliant before he even sees it, and then, when nobody else likes it, he'll either sulk and talk about how stupid everybody is, or quickly come around and pretend he never liked it.

If by "hit and miss" he means screenplays that wouldn't get produced in a million years were they written in linear fasion, then yes, that is indeed a spot-on assessment.

vice - I don't even like the movies much, but that's a pretty stupid argument. "If he hadn't written the movies the way that they were written, they wouldn't have been made!"

"If Daniel Day-Lewis hadn't played Plainview in an interesting way, he wouldn't have won an Oscar for it!"

The Japanese section of BABEL is great, as is the hitman section of AMORES PERROS. The performances are good, but pretty much all of 21 GRAMS is terrible.

Let's not forget Arriaga also wrote THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA, where the second half of the film was told in a linear style, and just as good as the non-linear first half.

Also, I happen to love 21 GRAMS - it was my favorite film of that year.
