PUMA Follies

Jett just pointed me to this Daily Kos piece about the PUMAs, calling it "another example how stupid and bitter the never-say-die Clinton supporters can be. They sound like children, saying Obama isn't the nominee till the convention. Hello? GET OVER IT!"

What's going to be hilarious to me is if they "claim victory" when Hillary is put on the Convention Ballot when... as far as I am aware... that's fairly standard practice anyways, regardless of the loony-wing.

I think it's a bold, maybe even genius move by Obama to allow the conflict, the dialogue, the drama that comes with giving the Clintonistas a role and a stage at the convention. It became clear to me when Obama was quoted yesterday as saying that he's 'not looking for catharsis' at the convention. Right! He's looking at the larger narrative!

Sure it's risky business, and adversaries will try to blow it up as a weakness in Obama's game, but here's why I think it's a great move:

If it resolves itself at the convention, the lift will be immense.

If, on the other hand, there's no conflict to resolve at the convention, the lift will not be as strong, the theme of party unity not expressed as forcefully, and the momentum coming out of the convention not as swift.

And it's good cinema.

There's an old bit of advice on screenwriting that goes 'begin your story with Act Three of the previous story.' By beginning the narrative of the November election with the end of the primary story, Obama can be off and running on a cinematic saga that can, in comparison, make the McCain narrative seem like a shot for shot remake of On Golden Pond. Lots of fuddy-duddy charm, but ultimately a story about an old skinflint's demise.

Having her on the roll call is good for both of them. And it'll end the whole thing for good.

What's funny is that you only hear about PUMAs from the longtime Obama die-hards. There’s a very calculated movement afoot to make sure Hillary can be blamed if Obama doesn’t pull off the win.

I think this gives a pretty good impression of the PUMA mentality:
