Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Rule of Three

The other night Pineapple Express star-co-writer Seth Rogen told Jon Stewart that he's "26, but I look 50. I'll probably die in three years. I had back hair at nine. I had ear hair at 13." Another guy who doesn't look his age is Philip Seymour Hoffman, 41, who was looking more or less his age in Capote but looked about 59 (white hair, beard, the usual paunch) when he was in Cannes last May to promote Synecdoche, New York. There needs to be at least one other guy in his 20s or 30s or early 40s who looks a good 15 years older. Just one more.

i wouldn't worry too much about Rogen. Jeremy Piven was about his age when he played the actor doing George Costanza in Seinfeld. 15 years later, Piven looks 8 years younger. it's Hollywood math.

I've always thought Russell Crowe fairly easily plays men a lot older than he is. He was only 34 when he played Jeffrey Wigand in The Insider. But he doesn't seem older in the sort of "dumpy" way that Rogen and Hoffman do. And he's also played young, swash-buckling guys also, so maybe he doesn't quite qualify.

But I've long wondered if his ability to appear to be anywhere from 35 to 55 has been a big reason for his success. In A Beautiful Mind, he was fairly convincing (and without make-up till the very end) playing a guy from age 20 to what, his 70's?

Well on the other side, Garret Dillahunt can easily play 15 years less his age.

It has to do mainly with weight. When Sideways came out, I was shocked that Paul Giamatti was 37. He's 41 now and looks much older. His wife in John Adams, Laura Linney is 45 and looks much younger.
Look at those frat packers - the oldest of the bunch is Ben Stiller,43, who stays in great shape, while blubber bellies like Jack Black, who is only 39, look old. Waist size is also the #1 predictor of an early death - just ask Chris Farley, John Candy and Tim Russert.

once the cursed Eskimo script arrives at Rogen's agent's desk, his days will be numbered

Piven was hotter when the hair that’s now on his head was on his chest.

Ben Stiller looks like he’s had a facelift.

There are a bunch that looked much older than they actually are
Daniel Craig looked like he was in his late 40s in The Road to Perdition. He looks much younger now (must be the HGH he uses to get ripped)
Sean Connery looked 70 in Last Crusade
John Mahoney has looked 65 ever since Say Anything
Anne Bancroft did a convincing mid-late 40's chameleon act in The Graduate
Bette Davis also seemingly went from late-20's to late-40's looking in a heartbeat
Keith Richards (I know, not an actor) has looked DEAD since the mid-60's

I think whats scary about Rogen is that he's looked old for a long time now. In Virgin I thought he was older than Rudd, Malco AND Carrell. Even Laurence Fishburne only looked about 5 years older than he actually was in Apocalypse Now. Or maybe he's the minority since most maturing physical traits tend to happen to men in their mid-20's, and most actors don't really get their footholds in til they're in their late 20's Even the ones who are noticeable in their early-20's as performers (Cruise, Ledger, Franco, etc) are the pretty-boy types whose age is impossible to peg down

Rogen should get on the raw food train. Compare Woody Harrelson in Indecent Proposal vs. Semi-Pro. Raw food + spray tan + wig train.

John C. Reilly. He was 28 when he appeared in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, what, 15 years ago? Check out the movie again, it's like he hasn't aged a day since. He's looked 45 years old for at least 20 years now.

Catherine Zeta Jones has always played older, imo. So much so, that i doubt she is really 38. (30 in Traffic and 32 in Chicago?)

On the other hand, Rogen looked hot on Jon Stewart, and I'd never thought that would happen.

Piven has hair now, but that's true, damn, I'd forgotten. He does look a lot younger now.
