Those Robert Harris-supervised restorations of The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II will be shown theatrically starting on 9.12 at New York's Film Forum, with concurrent bookings in Los Angeles and San Francisco. It's all a plug for the 9.23 DVD/Blu-ray release of these two (plus The Godfather, Part III, which no one cares about). Harris did his usual first-rate work under the direction of Francis Coppola and the legendary Gordon Willis.

Part III always gets a bad rap. I've grown to like it, though, especially since Coppola says on the commentary that he would have rather called it "The Death of Michael Corleone." That sufficiently separates the movie from the other two for me. It also focuses my attention on Pacino's performance (Warning: SPOILERS follow)--
the part where Michael confesses, his angry outbursts and illness, the tragic loss of his daughter, and the final scene of his death (which I love for the comedic effect that I am convinced Pacino threw in there, regardless of whether he thought Coppola would keep it-- of Michael falling out of the chair at the end and landing face down in the dirt).
The weakest point is Sophia, who Coppola admits was just an art student at the time (and by implication, probably not the best choice for the role). I really think this film wouldn't be judged so harshly had a capable actress been cast to play the part.

Hooray for breasts in cool t-shirts.
Thanks for the heads up - I'd like to see these on the big screen at some point, and now it looks like I'll have the opportunity.
Yves>> I agree with you about Godfather III's being underrated.

is that the highly sought-after rack of Vinessa Shaw? Also - Godfather III is very underrated - all of the hate is due to Sofia's performance

II is a piece of shit. Who isn't bad in that movie. Pacino sucks, Andy Garcia is at his Garciaest. Old man Eli Wallach can't even play a believable old man.

This reminds me of Artie Lange's great joke:
"The Godfather DVD set is great, because you get two movies to watch, and one disc to do coke off of."

I met Robert Harris some years ago...actually
had him autograph my VHS copy of his
"Vertigo " restoration....he struck me as a
whip-smart guy who did not suffer fools
gladly. I worried about his career when he
started pissing off the studios by slamming the
competency and sincerity of their own restoration efforts. So it's great to hear he's still very much
active and in the business of saving films.
Bravo, Mr. Harris.

The animosity towards part 3 is rather silly. I caught the last hour of it recently on HDNET (I think) and was rather moved by it. It's true that Pacino played Michael more broadly in part 3 but you know what, age changes people. That goes for Al Pacino as much as it might for Michael Corleone. It's not as good as the first two but it's not bad either. I kind of wish the elitists would quit dumping on it. I'll even say it's pretty shallow.

Michael Corleone's death is so poorly handled, and flies in the face of so many themes of the first two, that I can't forgive the movie, even if there are good bits (which, honestly, I can't remember a single thing in that movie which was good or interesting).
When I finally got around to seeing it, I didn't remember how legendarily bad Sofia Coppola was supposed to be in it... but, watching it, I kept thinking, "who is this terrible terrible actress? Why did he cast her?" Seriously, it's the only performance I can think of off-hand indisputably worse than Christian Bale as Batman.
