Huh... just when I was thinking that Obama was running only positive ads everytime I've turned on the Olympics and McCain is running negative ads. Guess they're both really just playing the same, old game.

Wouldn't it make more tactical sense to make a negative ad about your opponent going negative if you're running on the "not same old, same old" platform?

And yes, I'm still likely voting for Obama before I get labelled the Jewish Devil by other Obama folks.

Standing around with your pants at your ankles getting beaten and hazed and rediculed is not appropriate or presidential. Obama needed to hit back and hard. I can't imagine you want him to run a Kerry / Dukakis style campaign. Just calling the other guy "Negative" is the schoolyard equivalent of telling a bully that he must have a hard time sleeping at night, or running to the hall monitor for help. McCain is a crotchety cranky bitter old man who grins like the grinch and flails his arms and has become craven in his desperation to please whomever he stands before. His shot was 2000 and he was destroyed by Bush and Rove. And he has learned since then. Gentlemen don't get elected. So he is throwing the kitchen sink. Fine. Throw the stove and the microwave back.

Obama needs the Russia/Georgia thing to blow over fairly quickly.

It's giving some voters an opportunity to perhaps realize that Obama is not the guy they want facing off against Vladimir Putin in a high-stakes international showdown.

This is a poor ad - Obama is playing into McCain's narrative rather than creating his own.

McCain has proposed a tax policy so obscenely skewed towards the wealthy, doing so little for anyone making under $200K, that you would think someone would have pointed this out by now. And then there's McCain himself - out of touch and coddled by wealth his entire life. And stuck on mistakes of 30 years ago, trying to "win" the Vietnam War in Iraq; marching through a Bagdad market in a flak vest and flanked by security personnel - all the while claiming things were just fine there. There's plenty of material.

It's early, and if Obama is the candidate I think he is, he'll abandon McCain's childish tack and move on to the issues people care about.

I still think that unlike any other election of my lifetime, the VP choices are going to go a long way toward possibly deciding this election.

It's going to weigh on my decision.

And I think that's why it's getting on mid-August and we still haven't heard a peep on the veeps. They're terrified of making the wrong picks, and they desperately want the other guy to announce first, so they can counter-attack.

Flynn - I don't advocate standing there repeating "thank you sir, may I have another?" but something more along the lines of what Three suggests. This is JUST a negative ad; there's nothing really of substance to it other than attacking McCain with generalities rather than either a) focusing on specific things he's done which will appeal to make voters not vote for him or b) accentuating Obama's positives compared to McCain (of which there are many). But a sheer attack ad for nothing more than attack doesn't scream "change" to me.

how did poor Steve Carrell get dragged into this tit-for-tat, your-strength-is-your-weakness nonsense. also, i heard some complaining about McCain's use of Obama's face next to the word "foreign" as implying that he'll result in more foreign oil. Well, Obama's camp puts the word "old" next to McCain as much as possible.

As a Democrat I felt a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when I saw Obama's statement from his vacation about the Georgian conflict. He was not even remotely presidential, his initial call for Security Council intervention and for all sides to cool off was an embarassment, and to do it in breezy Hawaii, he might as well have been in his pajamas. A major blunder.

Agree, but at least he wasn't watching beach volleyball. Actually, maybe he was.

This is a poor ad - he's playing into McCain's hands by crafting a copycat retort ("think I'm a celebrity - well, YOU"RE a celebrity too..ish"). There's nothing wrong with attacking McCain back, but aping McCain's own lines just keeps people talking about the same celebrity point, and it's not one that favors McCain. Note - this is not a free pass for Obama to go back to the "he's old" slams. But there's got to be better ammunition out there than this if Obama actually opt for the attacking game.

Meanwhile, McCain has already picked up the fumbled ball and is pounding this point even more effectively: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQk2jtLZoJw

Obama's got a lot of creative support - he has to do better than this.

Agree. Meanwhile, it's skin-crawling watching McCain Russkie-bash and being reminded how much better Reagan read lines like these.
Considering that McCain's campaign tries to keep a tight leash on their candidate, it's clear that we're going to see the third term of Reagan--except with an even more fact-challenged understudy.

Ummm, *Georgia, America and the World* needs this thing to blow over fairly quickly.

Some things are more important than politics. I tend to vote for the people who understand that best.

I couldn't agree more, but I have no doubt in my mind that Obama's people are hoping it blows over quickly for the sake of the candidate more than the sake of Georgia and the world. Obama and McCain hopefully don't think that way. But their staff is essentially paid to think in terms of what is best for the candidate and the candidate only. When I worked campaigns, I noticed that eventually the first thing you think is always "How does this affect the campaign?"
