Always Moving Train

The odd thing about Diane English's The Women (New Line/WB, 9.12) is that (a) it's a better written, generally more watchable and down-to-earth film than Sex and the City and yet (b) it doesn't feel as rooted in present-day mores as Sex does (or did). It feels, in short, like a film that should have been made and released a good ten or fifteen years ago. Twenty years ago would have been all the better. So it makes sense, as this English profile piece says, that she's been trying to get it made since the early days of the Clinton administration.

The trailer's awful -- even here in SF, audiences are sitting stone-faced as it unspools. English gave us one of THE great sitcoms in Murphy Brown (well, the first 3 or 4 seasons, anyway), and an underrated one called Love & War. But this thing looks DOA, and NL/WB isn't exactly giving it a big push.

Wasn't the film supposed to be shot about 15 years ago with Julia Roberts?

So....it's a chick flick AND it's dated? Awesome.

Only way this would have worked is all-black cast, Tyler Perry style. As it stands there is nothing interesting about it.

Okay - this is an out of the blue post, but I just spent a few minutes perusing Nikki Finke's blog about the dismal box office weekend, and found it to be LITTERED with right-wing trolls. Awesomely, most of them can neither spell nor construct a sentence, and love faux-cursing with hobbled creations like A$$ and SH*T. They seem to be unable to recognize a reliably week weekend, crap weather and a bad Nicolas Cage film as the reason for poor returns, but instead, lay the blame on the Hollywood Liberal Elite:

"This is not a Nick Cage issue at all.
This is how the public is reacting to degenerated Hollywood.
DEGENERATED!!!! Pregnancies without marriage, having kids without marriage, lots of partying, lots of drug usage, ridiculous GAY marriages, fathers divorcing moms, or mothers divorcing fathers, or cheating while married.

When media shows all these terrible things as normal life style, people like me, people with real family values, people believe in God, people that knows what marriage really is respond.

Hollywood lifestyle is not real life, where bunch of cheaters, liars, no values, drug using, gross same sex marriage or relationships?. Horrible thing is media is flashing this degeneration to young people like it is normal."

I don't even know where to begin with that shit (apart from unintentionally nailing Sarah Palin TWICE in the first hilariously repetetive entry) and it is only one of dozens of posts equally as insightful. Check it out:

Jada Pinkett-Smith as a lesbian sounds pretty interesting to me. Also, I miss Annette Bening and Meg Ryan.

"Out of the blue," bmcintire?" I strongly fucking doubt it. I suspect you're being used. Dig:
What the "right-wing trolls" can't seem to get through their fragile, egg-shell minds (and will continue to not comprehend UNLESS you let them know we're on to them. So [ahem]: Don't do that, 'kay?) is that "Nick Cage" not only IS "degenerated Hollywood" but also created "degenerated Hollywood" from one of his ribs and is sole proprietor of "degenerated Hollywood" and he always has been/always will be and he be NAME-ed " Jack Torrance" and---oh, darn it! If I have to explain more, you're barkin' up the wrong-- uh, NOT tree! No no no! But don't you see how (whispers to "bm", draws him/her near enough and intones): "Sarah Palin/ Satchel Paige /Nicolas Cage/Jimmy Page." And then (deep breath): " Aleister Crowley/Baphomet/O.T.O: “Bring to me under my stars! Love is the law, love under will..." and later “15: for I am perfect, being Not; and my number is nine by the fools; but with the just I am eight, and ate—now let light devour men and ate/eat them up with blindness!...” And later still: "It is revealed by Cage the minister of Hoor- SaraPalin-kraat: "Let my servants be few & secret: they shall rule the many and the known....These are fools that men adore; both their Gods & their men are fools." And it goes on from there. My point being: I don't know if YOU guys know what you're messin' wit! Friendly warning? Hell, this makes Bohemian Grove look like Don Knott’s Ken Berry farm.

Oh! Shit, almost forgot: (LOUDLY) "Sarah Palin Sarah Palin Sarah Palin." Done done and done. So mote be it.
