Apocalypto

You think this is funny? Beverly Hills Chihuahua (Disney, 10.3), which I believe without benefit of hard data will be primarily be seen by McCain supporters and their families, is just around the corner, and it's no joke.

My six year-old niece wants to see it, and I don't think she's a Republican. Not the last time I asked her anyway. She and her family are South African, for a start.

I don't get the terror over this. There've been a million awful anthropomorphic dog comedies before. Just ignore it.

I saw the trailer for this somewhere (can't remember which movie I was waiting for) and honestly thought it was a spoof, like The Fatties: Fart 2.

With this post, Jeffrey is now firmly in the land of self-parody.

I don't think the target audience for this movie is of voting age.

"The Faties: Fart 3.0. We called it '3.0' because it's about terrorism."

Texans? Are you serious?

Take the 'Beverly Hills' out of it, and you may fool some, but otherwise...no.

I checked with a bunch of Obama supporters and they said they'd all love to see it as long as it doesn't interfere with the new episode of Gossip Girl.

Get off the whole " McCain voters" thing. It's a freaking kids movie!

Republicans. Not only do their political policies suck but they have *horrible* taste in movies.

As someone else said, I believe, without benefit of hard data, that this film will primarily be seen by children. Honestly, every post like this erases 2-3 of your more thoughtful political posts.

Jeff - just as an FYI, there was a review that went up over at AICN earlier this week (probably a plant, but still) from someone who actually enjoyed the film and planned on taking younger people to the film because -- and here's the kicker -- apparently the film is almost NOTHING like the commercials and trailers.

There are two Americas. The one in which McCain voters are off seeing Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and the one in which Obama voters are eagerly awaiting Todd Solondz's sequel to Happiness.

Which would you trust with the security of the American people? Your choice is clear, America.

Every time I think Wells couldn't possibly post a more ridiculous political post, he proves me wrong. And it's no joke.

The funniest thing about this post is I can just imagine Jeff standing in the same spot glowering at the billboard for nearly two hours -- probably muttering profanities and "McCain" under his breath the whole time.

"...apparently the film is almost NOTHING like the commercials and trailers."

I can believe this. I have a friend who worked on the film, and he says it's about alienation, being a stranger in a strange land, and the immigrant experience, with an undercurrent of straight-up existentialism and an overlay of French farce. Certain aspects of it are like "Taxi Driver with a dog," with a satirical anti-materialism angle right out of Fight Club or Requiem for a Dream.

The lead is the find of the year. His performance combines a Buscemi-like expressiveness (mainly around the eyes) with DDL's ability to disappear into character. You really believe he's a chee-WOW-ah, when in reality he's part chi-tzu and part chiweenie, with a dash of dachshund. The makeup is brilliant, at least as good as Theron's in monster.

Unfortunately, his accent was so heavy (and masculine) that they replaced his voice with Drew Barrymore's. Well, it happened to Andie MacDowell, too. He'll get over it.

Okay, busted. I just added that last bit, because until about eight seconds ago, I didn't realize the dog was female in the movie and I didn't want to rewrite my entire post.

Hey, how am I supposed to know this shit? Do I look like a low thread-count McCain voter to you?

If anything, given the ethnicity of most of the cast, this will appeal to Latino audiences. Most are Obama supporters.
