"I'm hearing schmaltzy," a guy told me this morning about Joe Wright's The Soloist. That's all you can share? I wrote back. How schmaltzy? Does it manifest right away, or does it...you know, hold off until Act Two or Three or what? I'm sensing a certain actorishness from Jamie Foxxin the trailer -- is that a problem? Don't tell me Robert Downey, Jr. isn't good in this because Downey is on a roll and can't fail.

Trailer looks WAY schmaltzy. On another note, am I the only one getting fed up with the kneejerk overpraising of Downey? He's OK. Just OK. I'm happy he's rehabbed and all, but when did he become Master Thespian?

I'm telling you... it doesn't feel right because of Joe Wright. He IS A SURFACE-LEVEL DIRECTOR. HE WILL NEVER MAKE A PENETRATING FILM. ATONEMENT SUCKED and while I think The Soloist will be good, I DON'T SEE IT AS A BEST PICTURE NOMINEE, LET ALONE WINNING OUTRIGHT. He's got a nice eye but he has yet to access my tear ducts and it's easy to make them shits wet.

Wake up Jeff. It's Shine with a homeless guy.
It's also the kind of movie they make fun of with the fake trailers in Tropic Thuder. But those trailers just don't make fun of the genre cliches Hollywood keeps recycling. They also make fun of the people who keep buying them. If everyone would wake up and realize that these emotionally prefab "true" stories are cranked out of the same paint-by-numbers mold and sold to them as cheap fantasies designed to keep idiot viewers pacified by feeding them a portrait of a friendly, triumphant and overwhelmingly positive society that doesn't actually exist in real life, Hollywood sure as shit wouldn't keep making them.
I'm betting ten bucks it's got a dramatic courtroom scene in it somewhere.

BY THE WAY, DOWNEY JR. IS GETTING THE SHAFT THIS YEAR. CAN YOU SAY JOSH BROLIN? No way he gets nominated for anything. If he'd been pushed for Supporting for Soloist then MAYBE but with a strong Best Actor field, he's getting shut out, and stop the Iron Man or Tropic Thunder bullshit. That's a fucking joke.

I hated, hated, hated, the script for this movie. It was just so lame and corny. I barely made it to the end. I am rooting for RBJ because I have been a big fan of his forever. I wasn't a fan of the Revolutionary Road script either. Ben Button was a very solid read, but for some reason I am getting a Big Fish vibe from that. Big Fish was a great script but something didn't translate well with the film. I am really hoping Milk and Frost/Nixon deliver the goods. 7 pounds was another script I wasn't fond of, but I know some people who really liked it. I think we might have a disappointing last few months of the year.
Go Slumdog Millionaire...now that was a great flick.

When this trailer played, I literally thought it was for some kind of fake, tropic thunder style oscar baiting movie.

Few people who saw screenings say it's great and far more gritty than you'd expect. The story in its core is a bit schmaltzy, you can't erase that, it doesn't mean that you can't make a good movie out of it. So far, i hear only good things (until i came over here, that is).

Ugh, fanboys. Can't live with them, can't kill them. Sorry but you people wouldn't know a good story if it bit you in your collective asses.
