Lovely Still director Nicholas "Nik" Fakler, 24, following today's press screening at Toronto's AMC plex. The film is very carefully shaped and toned and all of an emotional piece -- the mark of a filmmaker who has something to say (or at least feel) and knows how to make it consistent and recognizable and entirely "his."
I've Loved You So Long star (and all-but-certain Best Actress nominee) Kristin Scott Thomas (r.) entering Toronto's Elgin theatre this evening -- 7:55 pm. The film is as movingly acted and well written as I've read and been told, each and every actor brings something soulful and very special to it, and it ends very well. The iPhone camera, by the way, is a piece of shit because it can't handle movement of any kind -- it has to be rock still -- and the light sensitivity levels are barely worth the name.
Sony Classics co-president Michael Barker (l.), I've Loved You So Long director Philippe Claudel prior to this evening's Elgin screening

KST, all the way. She's far more deserving than Winslet is, or ever will be. She's absolutely bloody brilliant in this. I could watch her all day.I thought Zylberstein was fine too.
I can't wait to see I've Loved You So Long. KST has become quite a great actress in her later years. Hard to believe given her introduction to US audiences via Prince's "Purple Rain" follow-up "Under the Cherry Moon." She was the worst thing in an abysmal movie.
As for WInslet, she was sorely overlooked for Little Children, a film that was too daring for mainstream audiences but one that will definitely grow in reputation over time.
Jeff, I feel you on the iPhone photo quality. Good news is that the new models have a clear upgrade in that department. I took photos side-by-side with a newer phone, and the difference is noticeable. It seems much more forgiving in terms of available light.
I saw Lovely, Still at the screening yesterday and thought it was such a nice little gem with lots of emotion and unpredictability. Good on this kid for making such a fantastic little film, and getting those wonderful performances out of two veterans.

Do we have a JT LeRoy situatuon, because that director is clearly a 15 year old girl?

KST for Best Actress. Amazing perf, let alone body of work.
It's her time, alongside Winslet, who's also badly overdue.
