East vs. West

"The ideas this nation was founded on came from the most cosmopolitan people of their day -- the founding fathers who believed in science, who looked to Europe for wisdom and who had no use for hicks like Bush and Palin. We keep hearing about small-town values -- you know, like shooting wolves form an airplane or forcing your daughter into a doomed loveless marriage. Cities are about diversity and thought. Small-towns are about..well, crystal meth." -- excerpted from Bill Maher's "New Rules" riff from the latest Real Time show.

When was the last time you or Maher visited a small town? Nineteen-ninety-never?

"Cities are about diversity and thought."

As well as high crime, murder, ghettos, crack cocaine, no yards, no wildlife, living on top one another, high rentals, hating your noisy ass neighbor who comes home at 2 AM blasting death metal (my experience living in Chicago), poor public schools, corruption...

Bill Maher enjoys the city life because he knows he can go down to the nearest street corner to pick up his next girlfriend.

Massey, you're nowhere near modern small town American life if you think the whole meth thing is an exaggeration. Come to good old SC if you don't believe it, beau.

Having said that, I predict the meth-head Palin voting block will stay home on election day.

So small towns have meth, big cities have crack. Are you arguing for the superiority of one over the other?

Josh: I visited one a decade ago, actually.

Mathew: "As well as high crime, murder, ghettos, crack cocaine, no yards, no wildlife, living on top one another, high rentals, hating your noisy ass neighbor who comes home at 2 AM blasting death metal (my experience living in Chicago), poor public schools, corruption..."

Well, we'd have less high crime and murder, if red-state gun dealers would stop selling illegally modified guns to criminals. You also can't play the ghetto card with us, after we saw what you did with New Orleans. The proliferation of crack and other drugs are the result of your zero-tolerance paranoia against people doing whatever they want with their lives. High rentals are still more manageable than your overpriced health insurance.
It's also hypocritical to accuse of lacking in foliage and wildlife, when you're the ones willing to turn the entire Mid-West into another Exxon Valdez oil spill. And don't complain to us about poor public schools, when the South ranks the lowest in educational standards, especially since it likes to ban evolution and global warming from its curriculum. As for corruption, well, who did you vote for President and Congress for the last six years again?

I spent nineteen years of my life in a small town and twenty-one years in a big city, so I feel uniquely qualified to comment on this.

Watch coverage during the Republican convention as they try to ask people "what are small town values?" and you'll see folks squirm and answer in Capraesque platitudes about "love they neighbor" that they obviously don't mean.

Small town values means being in your neighbor's business, making sure they're conforming to the program and not being "different". Small town values means you stomp down that "difference" whenever you see it. Small town values means "act exactly the same and think exactly the same as I do". That's why the Republicans love small towns and why they can't really give honest answers about what small town values are.

Cities have their reactionary and racist pockets too, but the diverse nature of cities in terms of race, religion and class divides tends to make its citizens a little more tolerant. It's harder for demonization to take hold when the person is right next door to you and you can see them striving just as hard as you are.

Sarah Palin does represent small town values. It's just that she represents the ones everyone is too terrified to admit are the real values held in small towns.
