Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

I've Loved You So Long

In the remarkable, deeply penetrating I've Loved You So Long (Sony Classics, 10.24) , Kristin Scott Thomas gives an immensely sad but highly sensitive and attuned performance that you just know, minutes into it, will be with you the rest of your life. She draws you in like some sad-eyed lady of the lowlands, but she never sells anything. Start to finish, she dwells in this fascinating zen-grief space that just "is." She owns it...and from the moment the film begins, owns you.

Warning to first-time viewers: Watch this YouTube trailer, obviously, but don't go to the Apple page which (a) offers it in various sizes and formats but (b) offers an absurdly over-explicit spoiler synopsis that can only serve to diminish intrigue and/or interest.

What kept me from loving this movie is that I couldn't understand, and still don't, what kept her from coming clean about what she did in the first place. Who wouldn't have forgiven her?

I've always like her. Even in "Random Hearts" and the cameo in "Mission Impossible" ... always classy.

Kristin Scott Thomas is a lovely, subtle actress who I have always really enjoyed. She brings a very specific and unique presence to any film she's in. I just saw her on Broadway in The Seagull and she was excellent as usual. And she was great speaking French in Tell No One. I'd love to see her win an Oscar.

Ernie: that is a tricky area for discussion given most visitors to the site haven't had the opportunity to see the film yet. let's reconvene after the film has opened and been well screened.

the resolution is a definitely a little enigmatic, but i think that's in tune with the rest of the film - of which i also share wild Jeff's appreciation and enthusiasm, in spades.

Can't wait to see it again. And i hope there's attention sent Elsa Zylberstein's way, just as there deservedly is for KST.

I would die to be in NYC right now to catch her on Broadway in The Seagull. Has anyone seen?

She's terrific in The Seagull (so, for that matter, is UK Office "Gareth" Mackenzie Crook as her son). It's worth the expense and effort to see her.Who knows: She many win a Tony speaking English and an Oscar speaking French.

I saw this yesterday afternoon. It was a beautiful movie. I knew within the first few minutes that I was watching a special sort of film - the same sort of feeling I got watching No Country For Old Men. As of right now, I've Loved You So Long is my favourite film for this year. Can't wait to see it again. Kristin Scott Thomas gave a powerful performance. All of the little things were just perfect - the way she clings to the cigarette packages etc - a tether to life itself for her it seems. I'd love to give my two cents to the question posed by Ernie, but out of respect to those who haven't seen it, I won't.
