"Let 'Em Know You're There!"

There isn't a lot of Paul Newman in these clips from George Roy Hill's Slap Shot -- just two locker-room pep talks -- but he and the Hanson brothers (i.e., the Carlson brothers) were beautiful in this thing. In the second clip, the riled-up referee's reaction during the playing of the national anthem is perfect -- two turn-arounds and a confrontation. "I'm listening' to the fuckin' song!" That settles it -- I'm buying the DVD later today.

One of his top credits, easy, and not as well known as some others. Maybe my favorite sports-related films.

Damn it all to hell anyway...I went looking for my copy this afternoon and I think my damn husband let my brother in law 'permanently' borrow it. Now I'll have to buy another copy. Same with Road To Perdition. I have to start keeping my dvds under lock and damn key.

While you're picking up SLAP SHOT you should also pick up a copy of LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THE FABULOUS STAINS, the punk rock satire written and ultimately disowned by Nancy Dowd. It returns to the "Charlestown" millieu and has a fiery, mouthy performance by 15-year-old Diane Lane before she became the neutered woman of her last few movies. Even in its compromised form, the movie still packs a nasty smack.

Best scene: When Newman finally tracks down
the woman who owns his team....the woman
has her young son with her...and the scene ends
with a frustrated Newman letting loose with a
staggeringly nasty, foul insult regarding the
kid's potential for homosexuality.
Love this movie, loved Newman's entire
career. RIP, Paul.
