Live Milk

This trailer for Gus Van Sant's Milk looks awfully good. Just a trailer, but it looks right, feels right, and is very nimbly cut. Sean Penn's Harvey Milk performance feels like a knockout. (If only he were taller! Sorry, but it's hard to dislodge the Times of Harvey Milk footage of the real McCoy, who was something like 6'3" and had really big feet.) This is definitely the Gus of Good Will Hunting and Drugstore Cowboy...but please, not Finding Forrester!

Emile Hirsh is way too queeny. Everyone else looks right on target.

Agreed. Judging by that excellent trailer this is the film to beat.

The music and large text interaction reminded me a lot of Funny Games trailer.

I like both films, a lot, but the Gus of Drugstore Cowboy is definitely not the Gus of Good Will Hunting.

It's probably the best trailer I've seen since Benjamin Button or at least since Appaloosa. Can't wait for it.

Looks terrific. Brolin is gonna be intense. With this and W. he's gonna have another terrific year it seems.

Brolin's cornered the market on dangerous nutballs this year.

If he stays on this path, he'll have an Oscar within five years. And before Grindhouse, I would have had a hard time identifying him. Hey, isn't that the dude from Flirting With Disaster -- James's kid? Don't know how he did it, but it's impressive.

Penn is nearly unrecognizable. It's good to see him play something other than a surly brawler. But when did he get so lined and haggard? Is it the smokes?

I, again, have to point to the flabbergasting doc "The Times of Harvey Milk."

This trailer is impressive ... but it seems too urgent, too "This is the most important situation that ever happened!!!" and it seems to focus the intensity on stuff that I don't think was necessarily as dramatic as it's presented here.

I want to see it, and I want the DVD. Van Sant is hit and miss but when he's good he's very, very good (like, "Spike Lee good" or "Jonathan Demme good"). I also think Harris Savides is the new Conrad L. Hall.

Vice: Actually, this looks a lot more appealing than BBM. Maybe because Gyllenhaal isn't in it...

Mick: Well, I imagine they're trying to tie the story into current gay rights issues.
