The new Vanity Fair has published an exhaustive photo article aimed at Marilyn Monroe obsessives called "The Marilyn Files." It's basically the contents of two filing cabinets -- letters, invoices, financial records, mementos, minutae -- that chart the story of her life. Photographer Mark Anderson took two years to photograph all this stuff. Presumably he and whomever owns the material are looking to cash in at Sotheby's.

That Marilyn spent $380 on her wardrobe, and over $1600 on "drugs and medical" (the largest item on there) kind of says it all.

According to one inflation calculator I checked, $28 grand in '61 is less than a quarter of a million in today's dollars. That's stunning, frankly. Even for a former star on her way down and out. Doesn't Paris Hilton get a guaranteed hundred grand just showing up to be gang-banged for a weekend?

Inflation is a difficult thing to judge, though. How much property could you buy with 28K in 1961 as opposed to 250K in '08?

Well said, and I agree, JapAdapters, about property values. I'd guess that what you could buy in '61 for 28 grand would cost at least a million today. If we're talking Brentwood, L.A.-- probably an estate costing 200 grand then would be worth $5-7 million now. Still, Monroe didn't die rich. Is my larger point. Not as rich as Lindsay Lohan, anyway.

JM, for give me for dropping two MAD MEN references in one thread (not that there's anything wrong with it) but in the 1st season Peter Campbell and his bride buy an apartment overlooking Central Park for around 30K, which is a piece of real estate that I'm guessing would cost many millions today.
MM may have died rich, but not on what she made that year. In so much as I pay attention to her, I doubt Lohan has a ton of money left either.

JapAdapters: "Mad Men"'s money references are always spot-on, I acknowledge. The kind of pad they bought for 30K in the early '60s would rent today for about 10K a month. A 2-bdrm on the park below 96th St. in a pre-war bldg. would probably start at $3 million.

This a real pity, that after she death some persons are only looking for fame, using the Marilyn Monroe reputation and fame as a tool.
