Negligible

Is this music for this lyric-free in this Coke Zero ad the basic track for the Quantum of Solace main-title song? More to the point, what's the last hummable James Bond theme song anyone remembers? Nobody cares.

Wow, that's terrible. Jack Black ain't John Barry that's for sure. And the graphics in the ad are so bland, Maurice Binder re-interpreted by a boardroom full of 30 year old cokeheads. Where has the art in the Bond series gone? The music, the title sequences, the brilliant widescreen cinematography of old? Sad...

To address both your questions, Jeff:

1. Yes, it is.

2. I would say "The World Is Not Enough," but I was in the midst of a high-school-age crush on Shirley Manson in 1999, so my opinion is not to be trusted.

I don't think it sounds all that bad, but I'd be more excited if they'd got Amy Winehouse on board, as promised earlier.

PS. MarkJ -- I agree the ad is awful, but I don't think it's fair to use that to reflect on the film itself.

I personally think most of the James Bond songs are fairly hummable, which can be either a good thing (as in the case of "Live and Let Die" or "From Russia with Love") or a bad thing (it took me forever to get "Die Another Day" out of my head). As for this new one, I'll reserve judgment until I hear it in its entirety (with vocals and everything).

As much as I like Jack White's music, I don't think he's a good fit for a Bond theme song.

He is also on record of complaining about the Coke ad, saying something to the effect that he recorded a theme song for a movie and not an ad for Coke.

I second "Live or Let Die." "Nobody Does it Better" really sticks in my head, too, but not in a good way.

I think it sounds promising so far but you can't really tell until you hear the whole arrangement with vocals and all. My only nitpick is that it's maybe a little too on the nose as a Bond song. I had this same problem with the Garbage theme from a while back.

Did Meg get to drum?

World is Not Enough might be a bit hummable but I'd go back to A View to a Kill for the last really good, catchy tune.

I suppose you could hum Die Another Day if you have a stutter or something. That's not politically incorrect is it?

At the risk of starting an alterno-thread, clearly the best Bond songs (in no particular order) are:
-A View to a Kill
-Live and Let Die
-Nobody Does it Better

All Time High and Goldfinger get points for kitsch, I guess.

(And Thunderball is the best Bond song)

I always get the end-title song from Tomorrow Never Dies (the one sung by k.d. lang) stuck in my head. You can tell David Arnold originally intended it to start the movie because he uses the moledy throughout the score.

The Sheryl Crow thing they went with for marketing purposes was clearly a last-minute thing, and while I like it OK, it isn't that Bond-y. Plus I can never remember how it goes because the other version is so much more memorable.

Following David's alterno-thread, the three best Bond songs are (to me) so clearly:

- You Only Live Twice
- Nobody Does It Better
- From Russia With Love

Goldfinger, I agree, is spectacular kitsch. The worst? A
neck-and-neck race between For Your Eyes Only and Die Another Day.

A big part of the James Bond sound is the 100 piece orchestra, what's heard in that ad sounds like a generic temp track used for a Bond parody sketch on SNL.

I actually liked the new Casino Royale opening song even if I'm 50/50 on the film.

As for the worst, the one two punch of Duran Duran's "A View to a Kill" and Aha's "The Living Daylights". Time has not been friendly to those 80's themes.

There's a clip of the actual song out there, and it's every bit as terrible as this ad.

The World Is Not Enough was okay for a Bond theme, but the last 'good' one was probably Goldeneye. I wouldn't say it was as memorable as the classic songs, though.

You have to go all the way back to the Roger Moore era to find something that's worth humming. It's also the last time Bond themes actually became hit songs (ie. Live and Let Die, Nobody Does It Better, For Your Eyes Only, All Time High, and A View To A Kill).

JeffK, you're a madman. Just watched A VIEW TO A KILL the other day and the Duran Duran track is practically the highlight and the theme it shares with the film's score is one of the better of the Roger Moore era. Agreed on A-ha though.

I'll have to agree with you on that one. It sounds like too many artists and styles colliding with each other. And why do the trumpets sound so amateur?

The best Bond song not used in a Bond movie would be "Hold Me,, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" by U2. It sounds more like a Bond song than the ones used in the past two movies.

Always wondered if it was a rejected tune from when Bono & The Edge did "Goldeneye".

I guess I was the only one who thought Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" was a damn good song. Oh, and I'm a huge "The Living Daylights" fan as well, so you probably just want to ignore my opinions altogether.

I just like to sing Bond titles to the tune of 'You Only Live Twice'. It works most of the time

"Die Another day
or so it seems..."

"A View to a Kill
or so it seems..."

"From Russia With Love
or so it seems..."

"(the) World is not enough
or so it seems..."

"Quan... tum of Solace
Or so it seems"

"Cas... ino Royale"

"Di...amonds are Forev-
er, so it seems"

sometimes you have to stretch it a bit.

While a number of these "older" James Bond songs are definitely classics, the LAST great Bond theme song to me was A-ha's "The Living Daylights." Although it was only a hit in Europe, I thought this was an excellent and memorable collaboration with John Barry, terrific production and instrument blend. Two wonderful new Pretenders songs on the album soundtrack as well.

There's a reason they're still using the Dr. No theme song in every single James Bond movie ever made. That's the tune that says James Bond.
