Nope

Forget about Russell Crowe playing Dr. Watson to Robert Downey, Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes in the Warner Bros./Guy Ritchie flick being prepared. An agency guy just called me to report that Crowe has passed.

Damn shame. I guess we'll be treated to Shia LaBeouf's best British accent.

I'm all for off-beat casting. But, isn't RDJ a little on the short side to play Holmes. Holmes should be at least a few inches taller than Watson. Movies are a visual medium and need to make sense from a visual aesthetic. I don't know if I could buy a movie where Watson towers over Holmes. Would you accept a Batman movie where Robin was six inches taller than Batman?

Crowe never even considered doing this film. To quote Crowe via his fan website ... It was "not even a gleam in my eye"

From what I've been able to discover, Ritchie mentioned being interested in Crowe for Watson during a UK TV interview... Crowe was never directly approached, and when he heard about it and all the media claims, ie that he'd actually signed on, he denied involvement via his reps.

Did Ritchie want Crowe? Dunno, but Crowe choses his directors and projects very carefully, and it's hard to believe that Ritchie's record and reputation are worth his interest.

Easy does it, drbob.

Did you happen to see Capote, LOTR, or any Bogart/Bacall film?

I don't have anything against characters of short stature. The characters in Capote and LOTR were meant to be short. And, I don't have anything against short actors being paired with taller actresses, ala Bogart/Bacall, Cruise/Kidman. But, some characters are meant to be tall and I think Holmes is one of them.
