Saw this on the tube last night and thought that if Paul Newman called me and told me he had swamp land in Florida to sell, I would have bought it. The Brooklyn Bridge. Amway.
He was the coolest kid in school, but even better. Maybe if that coolest kid had a touch of Mother Theresa, and a whole lot of Brando or Elvis in his DNA, and he had the time to stop and shake hands with even the nerdiest of geeks as he walked down the hallways to his own beat.
Man, that really got me. It is always sad to see a true legend pass, but Newman is especially tough. He was just such a class act and true star. It is a cliche, but in this case, totally accurate: They just don't make 'em like that anymore.
All weekend long I kept meaning to search YouTube for that "Where the hell's the singing cats???" clip. That was about the last thing I saw on Letterman before I stopped watching regularly.
It was fitting that Newman got to pass away on his own terms and in a non-traumatic manner. Non-traumatic to both him and us, for we had the warning and then a month to prepare for it.
I only wish Letterman's people had resisted the urge to go for the maudlin musical choice. Should have been something up tempo that celebrated his life with energy. You know that's how he would have wanted it...
Agreed about the music choice, D_G. I wondered if the only reason they chose to drag out "Hallelujah" (and Rufus Wainwright's terrible version, no less) one more time was because of the line:
"I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord"
I would hope it was just a coincidence, but I dunno...

I was in awe of him.

Thank you so much Jeff for posting this. The man was a hero of mine and his passing has taken a worthwhile piece of this planet with him.
Peace, Mr. Newman. You deserve it, if anyone does.
