Rumble & Rainstorms

A major character in a significant 1990s film twice quotes -- i.e., says out loud -- the following John Milton line from Paradise Lost: "Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to the light." And the film is...?

It was definitely Devil's Advocate, but I'm pretty sure it was Keanu Reeves' mother who said it. Can't remember her name.

I'm gonna go with High Chaparral on this one and say Seven.

Since when has Devil's Advocate been a significant 90's film?

If anyone is quoting Milton, it has to be Ricardo Montalban in "Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan".

"significant '90's film" + "quotes Milton" equals 'Seven'.

I was going to guess Hannibal Lector, but I've seen "Silence of the Lambs" enough times that I would have remembered that specific quote. Besides, Lector is more of a Donne fan, and then only in "Hannibal", and then only in the book... right?

nevermind.

Of course, if Bill Maher had his way, we wouldn't be wasting our time with lines from poems based on silly Christian superstitions, like John Milton's Paradise Lost.

That may** be true, but if Christians had had their way, Milton would've been burned as a heretic.

** = I say "may" because nothing Maher has ever said would suggest that what you're saying is in any way accurate, but it might still be something that he believes. As far as I've seen, Maher's criticism of religion is limited to people living their lives based on it, as if it's true; I've never heard him say that art should not be inspired by religion, or that religious-inspired art is inherently lesser than secular art.

"The reason Milton wrote in fetters when he wrote of Angels & God, and at liberty when of Devils & Hell, is because he was a true Poet, and of the Devil's party without knowing it."
