Today's Toronto rundown: Joel and Ethan Coen's Burn After Reading at 9 am, which will necessitate blowing off a 9:30 screening of The Secret Life of Bees and a 9:45 screening of Waltz With Bashir (which I missed in Cannes). A writing period from 11 to 12:30 (which will necessitate not seeing Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist) follows, and then comes Ed Harris's Appaloosa at 1 pm. (I saw Rachel Getting Married in Los Angeles so missing the 1:45 screening of this Jonathan Demme film is of no concern.)
Then comes a battle between Witch Hunt and O'Horten at 5 and 5:30, respectively. (I'll be thinking and deciding right up to the showtimes.) The last film of the day is a public showing of Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain, which will be followed by a chat with Arriaga and then, most likely, a party or two.

I haven't seen O'Horten, but Witch Hunt was a pretty compelling documentary. It won't blow you away, but it's definitely worth a look.

Why haven't you said anything about the latest from Demme? Everyone seems to be raving about it...

RACHEL GETTING MARRIED was just stricken with the Poland curse, called the "best American film of the last 15 years".

Burma... he said "Altman" not American. So, just as John McCain told me to do last night, here's my little helping hand, teaching an "illiterate adult how to read."
We all know the best American film of the last 15 years is the result of the reverse Poland curse, THERE WILL BE BLOOD. If RACHEL is as good as GOSFORD PARK, I look forward to it possibly, yes, being the best American film of the past 15 years, because that's what it would take.
That said, it looks pretty good!
To be fair, Poland loved EYES WIDE SHUT when it came out... so props for that.

Wells to actionman, Burmashave, et. al.: I decided to hold my water on Rachel Getting Married until arriving in Toronto, and since I've been here I just haven't gotten around to it. But the Poland Curse is certainly applicable as far as his best American film of the last 15 years" line. lt could indeed be a factor in this film's reception, if history is anything to go by. The Movie Gods always know when a film has been overpraised, and they always spring into action when they get wind of this. Demme's movie has a few...well, some wonderful things (Anne Hathaway and Rachel DeWitt's performances among them), but it has, trust me, problems galore. If you want to take it as a multicultural dream-wedding movie occuring entirely inside Jonathan Demme's head and heart, fine...enjoy yourself, go to town. But if you're looking for a wedding movie that has something to do with actual life (and which reflects upon same in a way that most of us understand or recognize to some degree)...then it's a helluva head-scratcher and a confusion-contortion to end all confusion-contortions. I'll get into it later today or tomorrow...whenever, no hurries.

Interesting. I look forward to your extended comments. Have always been a fan of Demme's films so I am looking forward to this new one. It's not at the top of my list of movies to see this fall but it's certainly on it.
Wells -- have you ever seen Susanne Bier's After the Wedding? Great film right there.
