I've been caught up in some issues today. Lots of research, lots of calls. I just wrote a piece about how it's impossible to accurately assess the restored Godfather discs without a full-boat Blu-ray and 50" high-def system, which I still don't have...and then I hit the wrong button and lost the whole article. On top of which the software gremlins at Apple/iPhone came up with a iPhone update that I was stupid enough to download and try to install. The data stopped loading at the 85% mark and now the phone is unusable. I have no choice but to see a genius at the Grove Apple store at 4 pm -- it's unfixable at this end.

I was also going to get into Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting Married, which I saw for the second time last night at the Arclight, but this is one of those rare days when I just don't give a damn. I think I had an empty day sometime last year, and here we go with another. I don't take weekends off, I don't take nights off, I rarely do lunches...and this is how it goes once in a blue moon.

Apple screwed me a few days ago too. Did a regular software update on my computer, and it corrupted my entire drive to make the computer unusable.

Jeffrey, is it safe to say that you on occasion watch movies on DVD or Blu Ray for purposes of this column? If so, get off your ass and buy a proper HD set already! I'm pretty sure you could write it off as a business expense, plus LCD's are getting ridiculously cheap. I bet you could nab a 50" set for a grand or less, and when you factor in the tax deduction it's even cheaper. For blu ray, I think the Sony playstation 3 is still the consensus choice for best value.
I much prefer your writing to David Poland's, but he was the one who wrote a fun column that got me all excited about the new Godfather set on Blu Ray, not you. Get the damn HDTV and make sure that doesn't happen again!

I'm having that type of WEEK; many I know are.
I name this condition here and now: its U.S. Fatigue Syndrome. A unique condition to those who see both the many different ways that the United States is tearing itself down and that there is no real way to back out of this situation; Pandora's Box was opened a long, long time ago.
On another point, it is me or doesn't Anne Hathaway look like a bit off in that poster?

looks like Anne had just been told that her boyfriend has been ripping off people by claiming to be raising money for the Pope.
And when will we hear more about how that guy duped John McCain?
