A mildly funny rundown of the highlights of the just-concluded Toronto Film Festival, written by Eye Weekly's Marc Weisblott. Not a review of the films, of course, but the episodes -- Lou Lumenick's whacking of Roger Ebert, the Toronto Sun's Bruce Kirkland decrying corporate elitism, the theft of my Canon digital camera by "three young apes," etc.

I spoke to a friend tonight who's been to the festival every year in the past decade. He said this year's was unquestionably the weakest selection of films, and the increase in ticket prices, increase on pass restrictions, etc. all are contributing to the fest's decline.

Sounds familiar to Sunset Junction this year. 20 dollars for a street fair... cokplete with shit bands and booth after booth of bacon wrapped hot dogs and lemonade? This also includes, and this is in Wellsian-fashion, the repulsion of walking amongst dirt bag after dirt bag strutting around shirtless and showerless. If you can afford 20 bucks to get into nothing.... you can afford a shower.
Try doing that, Wells, and then get back to me.

I lived in Toronto from 92 to 2008 -- back in the "good old days" tickets were cheap, the general audience was treated the same as the industry and press people, you could find yourself standing in line next to people like Abel Fererra, Brian DePalma and the then unknown Quentin Tarrantino and Robert Rodriguez. It was unlike any other film fest out there ...
And now it's just like everything else -- Hollywood moved in, the Festival realized "hey, we can totally charge 30 bucks a ticket" and turned what was a great fest into a steaming pile of shit. If I ever go to another installment again it'll be too soon.

I've been going to TIFF for over a decade and this year's selection of films was the best I've ever experienced. How Jeff can complain is beyond me because a) he notoriously walks in and out of press screenings halfway through the movies and b) he saw about 3 movies with subtitles (if that) the whole time he was here. It's called the Toronto INTERNATIONAL Film Festival for a reason. More than anything, it's a chance to catch up with great films from all over the world. If all you care about is seeing the mainstream Hollywood films that will be out in a few weeks anyway, you deserve to have a shitty festival.

Maybe your camera wouldn't have been stolen if you didn’t go around announcing to the entire world how much you paid for it and how expensive it is....just a thought.
