The Venice Film Festival has handed the Golden Lion award to Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler. It would obviously have been a nice double-whammy if they'd given the Best Actor prize to comeback kid Mickey Rourke, whose lead performance in Aronofsky's film was strongly praised here and there. (The Wrestler will screen for TIFF press on Monday.) The only other English-speaking winner was Jennifer Lawrence, who won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor or Actress for her performance in Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain.

Sounds like Wim Wenders implied Rourke would've taken Best Actor as well, but there's a rule that they don't give acting prizes to the winner of the Golder Lion. (Must've made the guy who DID win Best Actor feel warm all over.)
Can't wait to see the film.

It's a shame that all the buzz is about this film and so little on HURT LOCKER, which was the talk of the festival - where's the love for KATHRYN BIGELOW??? Corliss gave the film a love letter, (http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1838615,00.html) and I'm hearing that the Italian press are all pissed cause it was their favorite. Oh, and here's something else, that guy who panned it in Variety was apparently going around the VF saying what a great &&^ film it was - that's why we LOVE CRITICS. HURT LOCKER was such a superior film to the WRESTLER -- why is it always the stupid sappy stories that people fall for??

Deez is a closet rasslin' fan.
Like Jeff said before, it's rather hard to look at Mickey Rourke nowadays and if the film consists of a lot of tight close ups of his ugly mug (especially with a goofy looking hearing aid. Maybe Rourke could play Mickey in Stallone's proposed Rocky prequel).
Has there ever been a really good movie made about professional wrestling? There's a lot of great material out there for it. It will be interesting to see if Aronofsky really digs into the "sport's" darkest crevices.

I'm a rasslin' fan and have been since the days of the Von Erichs - really looking forward to this film. Glad to see it's getting some attention.

Nothing will ever be as emasculating as Tarantino making Travolta play GREASE and WELCOME BACK, KOTTER board games, unless that is an urban legend.

Not really, but I'm familiar with the culture. I'm more into this wrestling manga series called Ultimate Muscle, to be honest.

Does Beyond the Mat count?
