In her recently televised interview with NBC's Brian Williams, Sarah Palin pronounced the embattled country where over 4,000 American troops have died as "Eye-rack." It's Ehrahq, you moron. And if you want to ape the way the locals say it, it's Uhrahq. (Or at least, that's what an Italian director told me a couple of years ago.) I have no tolerance for people who say Eyetalian either. Saying eye-anything is like having a tattoo across your forehead that says "yokel."

It's the equivalent of "Nuclear" and "Nucular" -- yeah, everybody knows the proper pronunciation is the first one, but saying it like a hick is supposed to somehow endear you to the hicks casting their ballots.
It works too.

In that video just two posts down, the black US solider on the telephone clearly pronounces the word, "Eye-rack", and yet he gets a FREE PASS even though he's probably been living in the god-forsaken country for months, if not years.
Waaaazzzz up...with that.

On the other hand, we are allowed to say Par-ISS and not Par-EE, so I'm not sure these sorts of pronunciation guidelines are consistently applied.

No shame in being annoyed by this, but it's fairly common. I saw Christian Amanpour call Wolf Blitzer our for saying Eye-Rack live on the air a year or so ago. It was funny.

Arguing about pronunciation is stupid. What's the correct way to pronounce the spanish word 'Los Angeles'? Should we start calling Germany 'Bundesrepublik Deutchland'? Do we all have to start calling Boston 'Bahstin' with a thick NE accent?
This could be taken to absurd lengths. Truth is we DON"T have to pronounce place names the way the locals pronounce them, especially if we speak a different language. EYE-rack is the way most Americans (and people worldwide for that matter) pronounce the country's name, and Iraquis should have the good manners to put up with our linguistic shortcomings. That is the origin of a great many English words. The word Yankee came about because Native americans couldn't get their tongues around the French word 'L'Anglaise'

That is absolutely not true, even for Americans.
