Who's keeping the definitive list of whacked movie print critics? The Salt Lake Tribune's Sean Means? He's probably already added Arizona film critic Craig Outhier, but in case he hasn't here's the announcement. Arizona's East Valley Tribune (which publishes affiliate local papers in Scottsdale and Tempe) will cut loose 46 editorial employees come January, Outhier included.

Whenever someone gets it like this I always think of Joe Pesci's death in Goodfellas. "Oh, no!"...thunk, body flop in the linoleum floor, blood spreading out and the old-guy shooter saying with finality, "That's that."

I remember Wuntch as a decent enough MOR film critic from my teenage and college years in Texas. Atkinson, Lim and Wilmington are regrettable casualties of corporate liquidations.
Curious when Sarris and Reed will be booted from the NY OBSERVER for Sara V.'s TVesque go-with-the-current-flow appraoch to film criticism to become the paper's only unchallenged cinema voice.

Forgot about David Elliott. Like Wuntch, a decent MOR critic/writer. A shame Elliott was booted from USA TODAY in favor of now out-of-favor Mike Clark.

I didn't intend to be the Grim Reaper of movie critics. I started the list of The Departed to illustrate a point about how newspapers decide to axe their film critics and go with wire reviews - thus scuttling that paper's individuality to save a few pennies.
If I'm missing any names, please let me know at movies@sltrib.com.
