The Girl on the Train
Baz Luhrman's Australia (20th Century Fox) will open down under on 11.13.08, and in this country on 11.26.08. No one I know has seen it yet, but two Australian cinemas are pre-selling tickets. One reports a duration of 170 minutes; the other reports 177 minutes. It hasn't been officially rated or timed so both could be incorrect, but someone clearly knows something.

It's opening in Australia on the 26th also, but the premiere date is still kind of confusing at this point as some articles say one date and others say another.

No-one has seen it yet as Baz is still cutting.
There's a lengthy article in the local paper's this weekend about how, four weeks out, it's still not finished and is being delivered to Fox one reel at a time, thus no runtime is officially locked. Baz himself though indicated in the review it will come in around the 170 minute mark.
That said the local Australian premiere was scheduled in last week to take place two weeks from now - that could well likely be the very first place it will be screened. No local press screenings, and as far as I know no exhibitor screenings, have yet been set.

Why do I smell a whiff of Come See the Paradise about this, both critically and commercially?

If it's 170 minutes in the frenetic MOULIN ROUGE! style, forget it. But the trailer suggests something more classical. I'm eager to see it.

based only on the small amount of footage and stills that we've all seen, i have a very bad feeling about this one....i hope i'm wrong but i'm sensing more of a hum than a buzz around this....

I really liked Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge so I'm very interested in this.

I would love to see an elegant full-blown epic. But, when was the last one that actually worked?

I think Scooterzz is right. I sense doom for this film. There's nothing in the trailer that suggests anything fresh or interesting. And does anybody in the US care about the history of Australia?

Agreed about the title. The period is WWII.

With Baz Luhrman at the helm, the film now undoubtedly be a subtle, reflective mood piece complete with scenes of lengthy, unbroken shots.
