Footage of this sort would never be included in a major film today. Sexist, objectifying, poolside porn-drivel. Certainly not with a major star. The internet (that's right, no capital "I") has cornered the titillation market. A scene of this sort, which feels even more ridiculous due to that idiotic reaction from Phil Silvers, feels as removed from '08 as a 1930s Busby Berkeley musical number.

For 1962 it was pretty darn scintillating, where any suggestion of nudity was very rare--and having Marilyn Monroe the object, well, it was all very randy for a fleeting time--IF the film ever got completed, which it didn't due to Monroe's death. It was called SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE, and a very good documentary was done about it a while ago.

In fairness to Silvers, if I saw Marilyn Monroe emerging naked from a swimming pool, my facial reaction wouldn't be that different (certainly not any cooler).

I'm not an authority, but if I remember correctly Monroe badly needed a big commercial success at this point to offset all the grumbling about how difficult she was to work with and how over-budget her recent films had been. So this poolside striptease was worked into the script to get people talking. (Of course, when the film was instantly revamped as MOVE OVER DARLING, Doris Day didn't try to emulate these moves.) About 40 minutes or so of SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE were completed and, while they are fascinating to see, the movie doesn't look like it would have been a real barn-burner. It was supposed to be Fox's big Christmas picture for 1962 and it would have to have been a smash to recoup its costs. All the completed footage (beautifully restored) used to be up on YouTube, although it may have been taken down.

Youtube used to have footage of one scene with Dean Martin, and after the director calls, "cut", you just see the light go out of her. So sad.
Also, MM related is the article by Tony Curtis in this month's "Vanity Fair". Kinda interesting for fans.

Sexist? Give me a break. And I consider myself a feminist.
Just because I treat vaginas as sex objects don't make me a fucking sexist... just a fucking period.
