Changing Coasts

Hollywood Elsewhere is going to shift operations to Manhattan starting on 11.5 -- the day after the election. Six months, maybe longer. Not that this will affect things in any way I can imagine. Same screenings, same folks, same junkets, same action. I just want to be closer to my sons and my mom for a while -- that's all. I'll be parking it in North Bergen, New Jersey -- right across the Hudson, view of Manhattan, a little north of Hoboken, 15 minutes into town by shuttle.

Welcome to New Jersey. At least you didn't wind up in Hoboken. There's not a single movie theater in the entire city, which speaks to the type of people who live there.

Awesome! About time New York gets someone in this game of coastal Red Rover after losing Devin Faraci, Kristy LeMire, Tom O'Neil and others to the evil of L.A.... we need some new blood at screenings/junkets here for sure.

I've spent about 12 years of my life in New Jersey -- first in Edgewater (before its boom into a Seoul-on-the-Hudson), then in Paterson, and most recently nearly a decade in Westfield (whose attractive downtown was used in the TV series "Ed"). I have a lot of fond memories of the Garden State.

Has the NJ Transit light rail line extended up to North Bergen yet? It's done so much for the waterfront of Jersey City and Hoboken.

The multiplex in North Bergen is in a parking lot, the AMC in Clifton attracts sketchy characters and the cinemas in Secaucus are quaint in that 'this theatre was cool in the 80s' kind of way.

But at least you won't have to pump your own gas.

New York has its pluses. Los Angeles has its pluses. Neither is better or more evil than the other, and when I am in one, I am missing the other. If only I could be in both at the same time...

"CMAC -- are you referring to the Loew's Jersey City?"

Howlingman, no I wasn't actually. I was referring to going into the City to catch movies. And further, that he (Jeff) can see a movie in the aft then a play in the evening or visa versa. I also realize I should've said the Path Train not the light rail cause clearly one would get seriously wet if the light rail went "to the City".

Now that I think of it, if memory serves me correctly the Loewe's in Jersy and frankly in Manhattan are kinda skeesy... am right?

The Loew's Jersey City is in a sleazy area -- Journal Square. But the theater itself is a treasure -- the last of the old-time movie palaces lovingly restored.

The weekend before Halloween they're running a Val Lewton double header of CAT PEOPLE and THE BODY SNATCHER, and the Saturday show is Lon CHaney's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA with live organ accompaniment.

And you can take the PATH from New Jersey to Film Forum, a few blocks' walk from the Christopher Street station, IIRC, whose three theaters feature a wonderful repertory house. (My all-time favorite actress, Carole Lombard, will be honored during her centennial with a 24-film festival -- including some rarities, I am promised -- from Nov. 21 to Dec. 2.)
