Chopper Blades

The jacket art for the Criterion Collection's new Missing DVD (out 10.21) is classy, nicely done. The helicopter shot, of course, is from a scene when Thomas Horman (John Shea) steps outside his hotel room in Vina del Mar and sees what he sees, which tells him (and us) that a military coup against Chile's Salvador Allende government has begun. If I'd designed the cover I would have used the shot of the white horse being chased by soldiers in a jeep down a deserted Santiago street.

I might have to pick this up. I'd never really heard of it before and then I saw it in Harry's DVD Picks on AICN, where the cover art instantly drew my eye, and now here. Interesting... Is it a must-see Gruver? I'm still trying to get through my Vengeance Is Mine Criterion.

Wells to the non-voting InSneider: Yes, a must-see. But it's about a serious political event, and since you don't like voting (i.e., it gets in the way of your lifestyle) it might not rub you the right way.

Sneider, did you know who Costa-Gavras was before now? Don't lie.

Re: the white horse.

I was an undergrad at Penn when this film came out, and Costa-Gavras came to present it and take questions.

Among the questioners was a totally credulous fellow who stood in line to ask, "What did the white horse stand for?"

C-G gave the most amazing Gallic shrug (yes, I know he's not french, but what does a Hellenic shrug look like?), and shaked his head side 'No' side to side with a bemused, pleading grin on his face.

Magic.

Amazing film. I realize that not many people younger than me (I turn 40 this year) have probably seen it. I was only 13 when the film came out and I remember going to see it in the theater. I wasn't savvy enough to understand the political undercurrents. What I did see, however, was a very human story about a father trying to reconnect with his missing son that he gradually realize he may never see again. MISSING does what so many political thrillers should do but often fail to do, and that is place the moviegoer truly in the middle of a "what would I do if I were the protagonist" situation? I

I saw this film years ago and appreciated it for the human story and the wonderful Lemmon performance, but I was admittedly too young to get any of the political stuff. I'll definitely be giving this one a second look.

Brilliant film, one I saw when I was thirteen or so and thought it was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen ... until I saw Z. I'm 25 now, and a bit less hyperbolic in my enthusiasm, but they're both great films nonetheless.

I want that Criterion DVD -- my own copy of "Missing" looks like a disease-of-the-week movie. Still, I picked it up for £1 in Woolworths, so I shouldn't complain.

This is a profoundly sad film with a great Jack Lemmon performance. Love that cover shot.

As a Chilean, I can say the depiction of Chile is definitely not so serious. Or at least accurate. It s 100 % obvious it was filmed somewhere else.
Its a sad political thriller though.
