Closed-Door Fears

A Daily Beast article by Paul Alexander claims that while Barack Obama is sending out signals that things are going well and that success looms, the behind the scenes mentality is fraught with concern about voter suppression as well as the Bradley Effect.

"The Obama leadership believes there is a systematic campaign," a source tells Alexander, "by the White House and the Justice Department to suppress voter turnout across the country." Hence, Obama-Biden campaign chiefs are "amassing lawyers and gearing up to counter dirty tactics on election day.

Team Obama has "one of the largest legal teams ever assembled by a presidential campaign," Alexander writes. "The main goal of the legal team, almost all of them volunteers, is to guarantee ballot security.

"'The Obama campaign has learned the lessons of 2000 and 2004,' a source claims. 'On Election Day, lawyers will be everywhere -- all the way down to the county level.'

"In Texas and other states, Obama officials are [also] preparing for the possibility that polls may be wildly off because of the so-called Bradley effect.

"'The Obama officials are very cautious,' says a source. 'They want comfortable margins in place just in case. They are looking at three to six percentage points as a possible Bradley effect. Before they consider a state comfortable, they want it outside the polling margins. They think the Bradley effect could be as large as six -- maybe even seven -- percentage points, but they don't really know.'"

Anyone getting a 1948, 'Dewey Defeats Truman' vibe? I've had this for well over a month. I'm convinced Obama is a goner, because the racists and the idiots who believe all the trash being spewed over the internet are going to decide this contest. Plus, I don't trust polling - never have - and I think the punditocracy, which is incredibly self-satisfied and has no idea what's going on in Fargo, N.D. or anyplace else outside the Beltway, has given this race to Barack, which is always a sign of trouble. The fact so many people are convinced Obama has it in the bag should be a sure sign that he's a goner.

Team Obama would be crazy not to do exactly what they're doing. These desperate pigs will do whatever they can to thwart him. That Obama has "one of the largest legal teams ever assembled by a presidential campaign" is only more proof that this man knows exactly what the fuck is what. But I'm not gonna rest easy until next Tuesday night.

Ibeale, I agree. I'm really scared that Obama might lose... our country is truly in DEEP SHIT right now, whatnot with that disturbing neo-Nazi assasination plot from yesterday that was foiled.

Obama has daily meetings at my sister's law firm where she works (in DC). She tells me that everyone there are VERY pro-Obama and many of them are volunteering to work in Obama's campaign, because theyre also concerned about the GOP scumbags tryign to steal Obama's votes.

A lot of people are doing the early voting for fear that GOP thugs will attempt to have their names taken off the rolls. They want to know that their vote counts instead of getting a Nov. 4 surprise that their name is the same as a felon on the other side of the state so they get stuck with a worthless provisional ballot

The same people who cheated their way into power and then have thoroughly abused that power every single day since then certainly aren't going to go down easy. The next week should be an interesting one, to say the least.

Having said that, the Obama campaign is way smarter than past Democratic efforts. They've stayed one step ahead this entire time, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll continue that pattern (but still won't rest easy until the election is officially in the bag...or maybe inauguration day...or maybe never).

I refuse to believe that those scumbags will steal the election again. Obama managed an amazing campaign. I'm sure they're ready. God help us if they're not.

Just to cite an extremely small sample, my family went canvassing for Obama in Salem, NH. Of the 10 or so people who would talk to us, NONE of them were leaning McCain. All were Obama or undecided (and more of the former than the latter). I was plenty surprised, but it makes me hopeful. That said, Lawyer up!

some of these concerns may be justified, but IMO, this isn't going to be close. obama will get near 57% of the pop. vote, and the electoral college margin will be larger.

I sense that Mccain's internal polling tells him the same thing. Romney staffers working on behalf of Mccain are already positioning Romney for 2012. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that these are the people leaking the Palin "diva" stories.

Today a friend showed me a flyer being distributed in Virginia that says, "Due to record turnounts and overwhelming demand, 2008 voting has been extended. Republicans and independents voting for Republicans should arrive at the polls to vote on Nov. 4th; Democrats and independents voting for Democrats should arrive at the polls to vote on Nov. 5th."

Don't sweat it..Obama has this in the bag. I'm a Repub and it was really hard to vote this year. I believe the polls to be accurate and that Obama will win a big electoral victory...McCain ran a horrible race and Obama ran a great one.

It's not Jeff unless he has something political to fret about.

Nope, the ones who are worried sick right now are those in the McCain camp. With even Fox running stories about how McCain needs a miracle, they know even more of his supporters won't turn out.

Also, imagine the wonderful schadenfreude of this: when his people do show up in places like Georgia and South Carolina, they will see nice long lines of Obama supporters waiting to vote. How many are going to decide "Ah, fuck it, McCain's lost. I'm not wasting an hour voting for the loser."

And holy shit is no one in the Obama camp taking this for granted. The get-out-the-vote machine is unbelievable.

Cautious is not worried. The Obama campaign is focused on the finish line.

The Bradley Effect is bullshit, especially this year when must of the poll calls are automated. (In other words, why lie to a robot? The Bradley Effect, if true, is likely only true with live pollsters.) And who cares about Texas, the deep South, etc? Obama could lose by 50% in those states as long as he wins a few of the battleground states.

And, don't freak out if the polls tighten. Traditionally, they do the week before the election. Voters go "home" and since Obama is holding more than 90% of Democrats, percentage-wise there are more Republicans to go home. Obama will stay at about 49-50%; it's not going to be a blow-out but it will be a win.

So, he's concerned he's going to lose Texas by more than what the polls say he's going to lose Texas by?

That seems like something to not spend too much time worrying about.

You can bet Obama will have everything ready for election day. The desperation on Fox News is obvious, they are completely in the tank for McCain. I know Bill(O'Really) O'Reilly claims they are not, but he knows what the what is. It's also the way they say things, this underlying sarcasm, it's almost dripping out of my tv set.
A few months ago I said I was not going to vote. I have changed my mind. Here in Ohio, the campaigning is non-stop, thank God it will soon be over. Here in Dayton, it will be in the mid 60's election day, so it won't be so bad standing in a long line.

I wouldn't fear a Bradley effect and I wouldn't fear the voter registration shenanigans from both sides as much as I would fear the possibility that all these polls are built on assumptions about who's likely to turn out that won't prove to be true. If pollsters turn out to have overweighted young people, urban residents, blacks and Latinos, etc. as likely voters, not only could Obama's margin vanish, he might even be substantially back. Who really knows what those groups will do on election day? No one-- until election day.

At this point a little panic rather than complacency and entitlement would serve Obama's turnout hopes well.

I viewed this whole Obama thing with mucho skepticism, the media pimped him for ratings and ad dollars but now that its wrapping up i'm afraid to believe he can win. an election is so easy to steal i doubt the repubs are even sweating it, it would have to be overwhelming turnout for him to win. he wins big or he loses small and i dont see him winning big. BUT... astrologically the planets will be aligned in his favor so....

I've met a surprising number of "Obama Republicans" lately. They have cast early ballots for him already.

Everyone likes to say they voted for a winner, and McCain has the stench of yesterday's Coho salmon about him.

The only worry I have is electronic vote hacking, and it's not a trivial worry. There is exactly zero that I can do to address this problem at this point, so I have to have faith in outside forces (e.g., Obama's lawyers) to allow myself to sleep comfortably at night.

RDP - My money for several weeks has been for Texas to be the shocker of the night, especially now that polls have woken people up to my prediction 2 weeks ago that the South was in play this year. McCain's lead has steadily been slipping and since Rasmussen did the last poll, the nontraditional voter there could be WILDLY underweighted.

Total blowout.

I have Bush-voting friends all over the south and midwest. Most are skeptical of minorities to say the least. But all have seen the light on GOP unregulated capitalism. All have taken considerable losses to their savings. All have issues with their health care. None have ever voted Dem before. All will vote for Barack. All their friends and children and neighbors will vote for Barack.

High 300 EVs, maybe 400. An absolute and total crushing fuck you to the last eight years.

You can't stop what's coming.

Even with the recent revelations that dead people have been signing in and voting in Texas elections (including this year's Democratic primary), I still think Texas is a lost cause to Obama.
