Denver Shuffle

George Hickenloooper (Factory Girl) and R.J. Cutler (The War Room) have put together an upcoming documentary series about Denver mayor John Hickenlooper (George's cousin) called Hick Town. Below is a 156-second teaser that includes a private moment between Mayor Hickenlooper, Senator Barack Obama and co-director George. Get out the vote, watch the show, cheer on the mild-mannered mayor, etc.

Hickenlooper-the-director describes Hick Town as "a high-end reality series about a big city Mayor keeping his office and town together. Think a real life version of Spin City or The Office. The first five episodes were shot while John (who Time ranked one of the top five Mayors in America) hosted the Democratic National Convention and dealt with everything from bomb threats to assassination plots to overly eager marijuana enthusiasts to stray dogs. This is a fun show that puts a very human face on public service."

Hick Town is executive produced by Cutler, Donald Zuckerman and Jeff Chianakas. It was directed by George Hickenlooper. The show will premiere on a soon-to-be-named major network.

After watching that I wonder how soon it will be before you see the headline at Townhall.com: "The Messiah enforces rule for no gum chewing in Obama greeting line. He's Stalin in blackface!"

I know I'm probably in the minority about this, but after watching Low Life and Factory Girl, you would have to put me through a vigorous session of waterboarding in order to get me to watch another one of Hickenlooper's movies. And using your family member as a subject is pretty cheap. Try harder, Hickenlooper. But I guess that's what you've been doing all these years, so maybe you shouldn't. Maybe you should just give up. You suck, bro.

Always wondered if there was a relation. Know the Mayor a little bit, he's an awesome guy.

Is anyone else giddy with the prospects of Obama as our next president?

Call me a doe-eyed optimist, but I get such feelings of hope from him- not bumper sticker hope, true hope. And I never thought I'd be saying that about anyone in Washington, much less the next leader of the free world.

As another (increasingly un)skinny guy with a funny name (It's Keogh, like Leo, but with a K, you should see how it's spelt in my native gaelic tongue!) I hope beyond hope that Obama lives up to his (unfairly early) legend.

I've totally bought the ticket with regards to what he says and seems to believe, and appreciate that sometimes a message has to be massaged in order to reach as many people as possible (but no Barack, Jerusalem should NOT be a single city, and a two state solution is the only way, no matter what you have to say to the lobbyists) but if he turns into another say anything politician, or even a new iteration of Kennedy (who had a way with words, but bombed Vietnam in 1963) I will officially spend the rest of my life as a documentary filmmaker doing all I can to show that anyone who wishes to be a politician should immediately and irrevocably be banned from ever doing it. Those with a powerful urge to control should be prevented from doing it at every cost.

He HAS to cut taxes for 95% of Americans. He HAS to move towards a national Health Care System. He HAS to speak to the leaders of Iran and attempt diplomacy. He HAS to restore the dignity and the honour of the US. Should he win, his first month should be the real intimidation, not the next 6 days.

And if he doesn't, America better stand up and ask why.

I wonder if the people of America know what they represent to the rest of the world. Sure, truth, justice etc etc. But your nation is a nation of ideas, and if it does not become what the world hopes is possible, then our lesser impulses have reigned. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but America is the great human social experiment. And of course, to put all of this on one man's shoulders is naive, unfair and patently ridiculous. But he may not just a man, he may be a walking representation of the greater impulses, the thoughtful consideration, the nuanced approach to human interaction, the calm answer to the worlds hates and fears. If he does well, I believe we all will. If he's full of shit I'll be telling my kids and my grandkids how we had a chance, and it didn't work out how we wanted.

I know I may be wrong, I know it is unfair. I know it is probably closer to stupid than I'd like to admit.

But I ask, is there anyone out there who can confess such hopes for the other two: Old man retard and the beauty queen? If so, you have my undivided attention.

Hey George

I had successfully not even thought of you for two years after many who knew you told me you had popped your clogs. Then last week you wanted me to add you as a friend on Facebook. And now today you think the asshole known as Milkboy is me.

People on the internet who had behind made up names and are pussies don't like you or me or anyone with a semblance of a career. Deal with it.

And don't fucking address me in a dream again, okay, at least until you get years of electroshock therapy.

Hickenlooper, as a family memento that clip is fine. But the most interesting thing about it is that Barack seems to be spectacularly uninterested in talking to you. It's seemingly just bland propaganda for your cousin.

I went to the Andy Warhol exhibit in London the other day and I saw real-life clips of Edie Sedgwick and it's like how could you cast Sienna Miller in that role. There was something so fresh-faced about Edie and Sienna always has that look like she's just rushed from doing overtime in a brothel.

Hickenlooper, there's a public out there. Address them.

I like how Sienna always looks like she just got out of a long brothel session. She's so fucking hot it hurts. Hickenlooper got to chill with her for a few months. I envy the guy. And the movie wasn't anywhere near as bad as many people made it out to be. Pretty entertaining, actually.

Yes, and people in Hollywood who "had" behind a desk producing shit like LxG and Transformers (ooo, i can't wait for part two, will there be more "transforming??") are dolts who don't like anyone with a semblance of a brain who knows how to properly employ the English language.

Stay classy, Don Murphy...

"Pretty entertaining" is a pretty solid pan from someone who considers Tony Scott to be the second coming of Orson Welles, and Transformers to be a remarkable achievement in the history of cinema.

I have nothing against Don Murphy. I actually considered him a nice guy and a decent friend until he started writing malicious things about me on the internet that were untrue. I don't know what motivated him to do it. Maybe he hated by pitch for AFTER. I thought it was pretty good. I never took it personally. I think at heart Don is a good guy. I just don't understand him.

Sienna is a great actress. It was an honor to work with her. And for any of you who might be interested there is a new, unseen cut of the film up on YouTube. This is a version without narration and a version that I cut before Harvey got his hands on it. It's the version Jeff Wells saw when he wrote the piece Derby Girl back in August of '08. I know FG has a lot of detractors, but trust me the film that came out in theaters wasn't mine. The DVD version is closer but the YouTube version is the one. If you're remotely interested check out "Factory Girl - Unseen Director's Cut" in 15 parts... It looks low rent on YouTube but what can I say? It is what it is. Thanks for listening.

WIth respect to Obama. I wasn't expecting him to be interested in me... He was about to speak to 100 thousand people. The reason I included the piece is because my relationship to John is part of the series. You can't get around the fact that we're cousins and it provides some very funny family andecdotes. The point of the show is to put a human face on public service.

Hm, I will give that a look, H-looper. Didn't feel FG was a great film, but I didn't feel it was that far off from being great, either. Thanks for the heads-up on that.
