Enthusiasm Killer

Page Six has reported that Clint Eastwood "made clear" his feeling that Sarah Palin won the vice-presidential debate in a public interview he did last Saturday with writer Lillian Ross.

"'One of the candidates the other night seemed more prone to telling the truth than the other," Eastwood said. This was followed by Ross saying, 'I liked her, too!' Eastwood went on to talk about how well 'she' did, although he stopped short of a ringing endorsement.

"The Post's Kyle Smith asked Eastwood, who describes himself as a libertarian, what qualities he believed would be ideal in a presidential candidate. Eastwood quoted James Cagney as saying, 'Plant your feet and tell the truth.'"

That Eastwood is a senile asshole is secondary to the fact that so many people continue to grossly overrate his output as a filmmaker. The man is a better actor than director, and he's maybe a notch above John Wayne's level. So it's to be expected that his lack of imagination on screen translates into political terms.

I'd really like Eastwood to explain how the female equivalent of Jerry Lundegaard (aka Sarah Palin) is a truth-speaker with her feet planted firmly on the ground.

Speaking of the debate, does anyone else find it creepy that McCain's answer to everything (the economy, the war, the environment, oil, etc) is "America is the greatest. We can do it!"

What is he talking about?

To sway the conversation back to the article, it says that Grand Torino is still coming out in December.

Any updates on this?

Re-reading that article, there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to indicate which candidate Eastwood was talking about.

He stated that one candidate appeared to be telling the truth.

Then, Lillian yells out "I liked her too." (which comes off as an attempt at non-partisan girl-power humor).

Eastwood then mentions how well "she" did, meaning he's admitting that Palin didn't completely shit the bed in the debate (as was expected) probably to appease Ross at her own event.

Seems like Eastwood made a joke, then Ross made a joke, then Eastwood gave a compliment.

Somehow, this has been blown way out of proportion.

Seriously, if Eastwood is taking this position, then I will never watch another movie starring/directed by him. Palin is in no way a political challenge to anything other than a broomstick.

Did anyone read the entire article? He seems to like Palin, which isn't the same as thinking she's the best candidate, and as the article states he "stopped short" of actually endorsing her, and then goes on to say anyone who runs for Veep has to "sell their soul". Much ado about nothing.

Enough with Palin. Look at the top of the ticket. McCain repeatedly said last night "My friends, I know how to fix (social security, the economy, etc.)" But he never once said how.

And as Gordie said above, "The American people are the greatest."

I think his problem is that, in his diapers, he can remember only a few pat, scripted answers, so he is forced to use a couple over and over again.

"I know how to handle these crises. I'll get Osama bin Laden, my friends. I'll get him. I know how to get him. I'll get him no matter what and I know how to do it."

Really? Shouldn't he, you know, share that information with the people doing the "getting?" Come on, I know "non answer answers" are tools of the trade for politicians, Obama included, but that was a pretty big jaw dropper.

[And I speak as one who would have supported McCain 2000 -- unfortunately it's the '08 model that's running.]

Please define McCain's policies of "hate, intolerance and ignorant willfulness." The third is a matter of personal viewpoint, so I'm especially interested in the first two.
