The gist of John Horn's 10.2 L.A. Times piece about John Madden's Killshot, the release of which has been delayed "at least" five times by the Weinstein Co., is that it will finally come out in January 2009. After sitting around for three years. Why don't they show it to guys like me, just to get a reaction and see what's what?

The adaptation of Elmore Leonard's late '80s novel stars Thomas Jane, Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke and Joseph Gordon Levitt. Apparently Harvey believes that the heat generated by Rourke's highly touted performance in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler (Fox Searchlight, 12.19) will bestow a want-to-see factor.

Hopefully, the movie isn't so wretched that it NORBITs him out of contention.
I remember Johnny Knoxville talking about this during the junket for THE RINGER. His role has since been scrubbed from the movie and the IMDb.

Does this mean they are planning to go wide with it as opposed to the small 50 screen release they were planning for fall?
Also, what is the problem with the movie? The novel had a fairly straightforward thriller plot with Elmore Leonard's typically offbeat secondary charcters, such as Knoxville's federal agent who stalks Lane's character during the witness protection part of the book.

Has the Weinstein's penchant for holding onto film indefinitely before releasing them ever paid off for them financially?
It just seems like whenever the pull this strategy the film comes out with little fanfare and tanks like everyone always thought it would.
HERO might be an exception since I seem to remember they say on that one for a good year and it made some solid bank when it finally got released.

I actually have some interest in this movie. I was just thinking about the fact that this had never been released.

I saw a trailer for this years ago. Judging from the trailer (& now three years later it still hasn't been released) they botched yet another Elmore Leonard book. Amazing.

Pretty sure I saw the trailer for this on CLERKS II or maybe even CLERKS: 10TH ANNIVERSARY. Absurd.

I always thought the Weinsteins could afford to
operate the Mirimax "friidge" (in which they
froze movies for years at a time) cause they
were comfortably sucking on the Disney tit...they cound park any number of movies in limbo, while Harvey used the Fridge as a weapon/warning
against directors who dared to complain when
ther films were Weinstein'd to death.
When they were separated from the Mouse, I didn't think their current investors would tolerate that stuff....but eveidently not.
Janurary release date? That's the studios'
Elephant's Graveyard where all unwanted movies
go to die. But adoring Diane Lane as I do, I'll still
be there......

MARGARET wrapped in November 2005, so it (sadly) wins the shelf game, lipranzer.

As I understand it, "the Fridge" in a way appeases investors, because any unreleased movie is considered a positive-value asset, something that can potentially generate income. But once it gets released, it must then be considered a negative value expense, and counts against the year's revenue. Since TWC and their primary distributor MGM have floundered for the last few years, naturally they're finding creative ways to stanch the bleeding. And what with THE WRESTLER indeed looking like a hit, Harvey's January move could well be a smart decision.

I know they often used "The Fridge" when their movies already were in the black because of presales, and releases would not be cost effective. That's what I heard happened to Equilibrium, anyway.
Regardless, I want to see this movie, especially since Tarantino isn't in it like he was always threatening to do for many years.
Long live Tom Jane!

I read the Christopher McQuarrie draft of this thing back in 2001. It contained one of my favorite openings ever:
BLACK
EXT. DETROIT SKYLINE - DAY
Establishing. Shit.
And it only got better from there.
Why they didn't simply shoot his draft is a question that continues to confound me.

They filmed this right around my neighbourhood (just outside Toronto) and it seems like forever ago.
How bad can it possibly be? Why not just release it already? Are they figuring that if they release it now it will make $4 million but if they wait tl next March it'll make $6 million? What's the strategy?
