My earlier absence today was due to errands, two meetings and aimless running around. I also had to buy a nice shirt-and-tie combo to wear at a $5000-per-person Joe Biden fundraiser I'm attending at the Pacific Design Center starting at 6 pm. But the real action this evening will be on Late Night with David Letterman when John McCain finally shows up and sits there and plays the good sport. Will Letterman take pity or...?

It's already been leaked that Letterman hit him with a G. Gordon Liddy question when the subject of Ayers came up.
No pity so far.

Did anybody watch the Al Smith tonight on CNN or C-Span? It showed the John McCain we all miss, the one who might have had a chance of winning the White House. Even so, Obama killed.

Burma>> Yeah, I saw it. Both McCain and Obama did a great job. In fact, they did such a good job of being congenial and roasting foibles - their own as well as those of the other guy - that I was left feeling slightly disillusioned. What has everyone been getting so upset about the past few months if it's all such easy fodder for laughs?

Pity? Not quite. Letterman skewered McCain. When he asked him if he trusted Palin if we had another 9-11 to lead the country, and he said "absolutely, the American people BELIEVE in her", I concluded that McCain is senile.

Sadly, perhaps, for the rest of us, I believe this is exactly how the politicians see it. They play their games, get everyone in a lather, collect their votes and then all go out together for a beer afterward.
Meanwhile, two blue-collar guys are beating the snot out of one another in a bar parking lot because one is wearing a McCain button and the other has an Obama sticker on his car.
