Legendary Racer Hearts BHO

Famed NASCAR driver and racing-team owner Robert Glen Johnson, a.k.a. "Junior Johnson" -- the guy Tom Wolfe wrote about in his famous 1965 article "The Last American Hero is Junior Johnson. Yes!" and which led to Lamont Johnson's The Last American Hero ('73) with Jeff Bridges in the title role -- has come out for Barack Obama.

"Our country is in a rough spot, and we're going to need some serious change. There's only one candidate ready to deliver it -- and that's Barack Obama," Johnson has written in a mass e-mail.

"Every day I talk to someone else who's never voted for a Democrat, but now they're voting for Barack Obama. They realize that Barack understands what we're going through here in North Carolina. And they're ready for change. So I've made up my mind, and I'm ready to get involved. I know that I could never have won a race without my pit crew, and I know Barack can't win this one without us."

This actually broke days ago (or should I be wagging the finger saying 2 days!!!!), but it's great news for the Obama workers in North Carolina. I know that many who live in South Carolina gave up on Lindsey Graham's home state and have been volunteering up in the Tarheel state.

Surprised Obama's people haven't been on the ball to exploit this - they should have instantly gotten Johnson to do a TV ad. From such, we can possibly assume that they approached him and he declined.

ADDENDUM - the best part of the email wasn't the endorsement, but the part that will probably resonate with Southerners more:

"I know what it means to run an aggressive race, but I also know what it means to compete with integrity. Have you gotten one of these pre-recorded calls that are flooding our state smearing Barack Obama's character and questioning his patriotism? That's crossing the line, and North Carolinians deserve better."

As a Winston-Salem, NC resident and life-long NASCAR fan (and a Progressive - I grew up with racing in the house and never could let the sport go), I absolutely LOVED this. Forwarded it to some of my red-state NASCAR-fan family members and they did not like it so much. In the end, I think it's about a 50/50 impact: of those who see this endorsement and are affected by it, 50% will say "Damn, it must be a good idea to vote for Obama after all" and the other 50% will say "Damn that Junior Johnson!"
