A group of New York press saw Milk last night," a guy I know writes. "You could hear people tearing up in the end so I suppose Oscar season has officially begun. [It has] some great Gus Van Sant creative camerawork from the pre-Good Will Hunting days. An excellent cast. Josh Brolin and James Franco are quite good, the latter especially since he doesn't have a lot to say or do but leaves his mark regardless. And yet no one really outshines Sean Penn's performance as Harvey Milk."

did you hear that the studio Focus Features has been trying to keep down the hype? WTF???????

the movie looks GOOD and I am disappointed that Focus refuses to hype up the movie, especially with Prop 8 coming up soon in California.

I suppose its safe to assume PENN will get a nomination for best actor here. There haven't been any really big front-runners as of right now -- with the exception of Frank Langella, perhaps -- it feels as if BEST ACTRESS is a lot more crowded.

Deaf, it seems the new thing to do with Oscar campaigns is to stand pat -- no one likes the front-runner: BROKEBACK, ATONEMENT, etc.

It's obviously smart to keep the hype down for both a) Oscar strategy reasons (don't want to peak too early) and b) political reasons (making homosexuality an issue during election season is straight out of the Karl Rove handbook).

I'm thinking it's Van Sant's year for the directing oscar. He's well respected and this looks incredible. Fincher is the only one I see in his way but I get a so-so vibe coming off of Buttons. Rev Road looks like a real contender for picture but I doubt they are going to give Mendes a second oscar and put him in the ranks of Forman, Speilberg, Stone and Eastwood.
Though it is entirely possible that Focus will once again win the best director oscar and lose picture to a vastly inferior film.
As far as keeping it under wraps, people have other things on their mind right now. It's best to wait for a week after the election and let everyone turn their attention back to everyday things. Besides a movie about a postitive minded political outsider overcoming intolerance and succeding through grassroots support might have some increased relevance then.
