Milk Quickie

"For the first time in my memory, we have a major Oscar movie that actually is a gay-agenda movie," MCN's David Poland briefly wrote last night. "But on the making, it is so much more. It is a brilliant, powerfully humane piece of work that reaches well beyond the issue of gay rights or any idea that this is a gay-only film.

"Sean Penn gives an Oscar lock performance of power and subtlety that ranks with the best of his career. Great work by James Franco and Emile Hirsch. Josh Brolin may not have enough screen time or empathy for awards, but got the mixed emotions of a murderer so right that I felt my blood go cold watching a shot of him walking a fateful hallway.

"And the mixture of doc footage and this drama is amazing, pushing the bar farther and racking up another great piece by Harris Savides."

I guess I'm unclear on the definition of "gay-agenda movie."

Why doesn't Philadelphia qualify? Brokeback Mountain? Return of the King?

Savides is a genius. Can't wait to see this movie. The trailer is phenomenal, I could watch it every day.

Mixed emotions of a murderer? I had no idea this was Josh Brolin's character from the trailer, and I'm not very familiar with the story. Damn. Not to be the ignorant whiner, but how about a minor spoiler warning here?

It's well known history. How can you have a spoiler warning for that? Here's a spoiler: you should read more.

I don't know how much of a spoiler it is anyway. Isn't Brolin put into the antagonist role pretty early on?

Also, I'm not sure if "Milk Quickie" is a good subject line if we're trying to stress the importance or power of the film...

"It's well known history."

Oh, give me a break Faraci. The details of Harvey Milk's assasination are not "well known history." You couldn't have told me a damn thing about it 12 months ago.

If we're dealing with Lincoln and somebody complains about John Wilkes Booth being a spoiler - then yes, your smug reply is warranted. But there's a vast difference between accessible history and well-known history.

Am I the only one that thinks of "I fought the law" by the Dead Kennedy's when there is a "Milk" posting.

The law don't mean shit if you've got the right friends
That's how this country's run
Twinkies are the best friend I've ever had

Massey, I'm sure you could go on my site and find references by me to the Twinkie Defense years ago. It's been a favorite punchline of mine since I was a teenager.

This is a famous story and a very famous case. Don't pull a Jeff Sneider here.

Like Massey would be caught dead knowing anything about Gay Rights history.

Is anyone surprised?

I Fought the Law was done by the Dead Kennedy's?

I know it was a Bobby Fuller Four song and that The Clash remade it, but I was unaware of the DK version.

Acessible History VS. Well Known History

That should be a college course. You could also answer questions like, Is Stan Lee as well known as Goethe?

Actually, I've known about Harvey Milk for a long time. I became interested in the story over a decade ago when Robin Williams was attached to the project. (At the time, remember, Williams was doing solid work). I apologize Faraci if you are familiar with the story, but to say it's well-known nationwide is silly. Maybe it should be taught in history class, but it ain't.

And Lazarus, I'd love to know why you equate fiscal conservatism to anti-gay. As a former stage actor, college newspaper writer, and gay bar attendee (seriously, no better place to pick up girls on the planet), I can assure you I would have clawed my eyes out had I an ounce of anti-gay in my being.

Is that really the standard? Whether something is taught in schools? Shouldn't people be held to something more than 'They told you in 12th grade?' Shouldn't people be expected to have interests and curiosity beyond the classroom? I wasn't taught about Harvey Milk in school, but I read about him anyway. And that was back when I had to go to a library to do it, long before Wikipedia made finding out about almost everything amazingly easy.

Of course people should be expected to have higher aspirations, but there is a limited number of things one can learn about. You could be incredibly well-read on a large number of issues, be a historical expert in multiple fields, and still not know the details of Milk's assassination.

I actually have little problem with Poland or Wells "spoiling" the identity of the murderer - Milk's death is not the main point of his story by a long shot. I just object to your condescending "Here's a spoiler: you should read more" tone.

Thanks for the backup there, Josh.

Yeah, I mean I probably should know more about the whole Harvey Milk thing (hence my "ignorant whiner" phrasing), but I was kind of waiting to see the movie as a jumping-off point for my research. Wow, is that so wrong?

Let me put it to you this way, Devin. They're shooting a Dam Busters movie. If you wanted to really see the film, wouldn't it kinda suck if someone had seen it early, and spoiled the fate of one of the main characters?

In both instances we're talking about minor events in peripheral history a bit. C'mon, you have to admit this ain't Titanic or Letters from Iwo Jima, or even Summer of Sam here.

We should all probably "read more." You can only have so much depth of knowledge on every given subject. I love reading about the history of metal music. Does that mean I would scorn you for not knowing the lead singer of Sepultura or Diamond Head's debut album? I should hope not.

But I am expressing interest in learning more in a subject that I (admittedly) don't know enough about, why should you disparage me here? How odd.

The irony of this whole thing is I was half-joking about spoiler, anyway.

Perhaps if I "read a little more" about Devin before starting to write this, I would have known that he's an ass not even worth responding to. Consider me "educated" now, dude.
