I've barely seen any Blu-rays of classic black-and-white films, but enough to know that the format is heaven for anyone with a serious monochrome jones. So my interest in the forthcoming Scott Derrickson-Keanu Reeves remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still (20th Century Fox, 12.12) is, I have to admit, at the very least matched by interest in the remastered Blu-ray of the1951 black-and-white original with Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Billy Gray, Sam Jaffe and Hugh Marlowe, which is out on 12.2.

People complain about unnecessary remakes, but the great part is that the original, assuming its from the same studio as the remake, usually ends up with the new super-fancy DVD special edition to commemorate the occasion. Without the remake, this newfangled edition would likely not exist. And I can't wait for that alleged remake of The Stepfather so we can finally get that Terry O'Quinn classic on DVD. All hail remakes!

The Blu Ray will probably really emphasize the wires they used to help Gort carry Patricia Neal. Unless, of course, they digitally erased them.

I was amazed when I read an interview with the screenwriter...who claimed nobody at Fox picked up on the religious connotations...(Klatuu goes by the name 'Carpenter' when walking amongst us
....before his death and resurrection)

Do you mind if I ask, in all seriousness, why you're interested in the Keanu Reeves re-make? I'm seriously not trying to start shit here... just wondering what looks appealing about it to you?
I finally caught the original after a long night of work a few months ago and was really blown away by how well it held up. I remember when AMC came out with their list of Best Sci Fi movies and I wondered why that one made it, but it all made sense to me after seeing it.
I just don't see how this environmental twist could be any more relevant than the anti-war message of the original, esepecially right now.
