One of the things that's striking a lot of people about Milk is how regrettably timely it is right now, with Proposition 8 (i.e., eliminating gay marriage) on the ballot in California. Which makes you wonder if the movie should have been released before Election Day as a way to organize people to vote this measure down. In the view of CHUD's Devin Faraci, in the 30 years since Harvey Milk died we really haven't come very far in terms of gay rights.

Oregon unfortunately passed a sanctity of marriage act (by initiative) to keep gays from marrying, but fortunately our legislature passed a blill to allow gay couples the have civil unions, which the Christian Right took to be an affront to voters' rights. Of course those same Right Wingers forget to mention that even the proponents of the passed ballot measure said they weren't opossed to civil unions. So for all those who think it's pointless to vote, at least vote for local and state issues. Our voice does count!
