"In a campaign of almost continual surprise, shock, and even awe, we have just turned a corner that might prove Barack Obama either a political genius or someone very close to that," writes Daily Beast columnist Stanley Crouch. It may sound at first like Crouch is carrying water, but he's a very sharp observer and he seems to be onto something here.
"The Republicans may have mistaken their adversary for just another Democrat sleeping under a shade tree and looking like a mark. Not. In real terms, that assumption might prove as costly to them as Robert E. Lee underestimating Ulysses S. Grant. This man is a brawler but a quiet one. He may use a scalpel instead if a broad sword but the jugular doesn't know the difference
"This past Friday, Obama made a decision that either he had conceived himself or recognized the importance of with the sudden kind of clarity necessary for superior leadership. Bob Bauer, the foremost legal representative of the campaign, fired off a letter to the Department of Justice asserting that all of the recent hissing and howling about ACORN by Republicans in many places, and John McCain specifically in the final presidential debate, should be taken off of life support.
"U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey was advised to put Nora Dannehy, special prosecutor, in a position to investigate the possibility of collusion between the Republican Party and the Justice Department. This could clear away all of the claims of voter fraud that might result in gumming things up with unnecessary investigation.
"If this Obama brings this off, we will have witnessed an exceptionally shrewd part of a grand strategic vision."

Stanley Crouch saying anything nice about anyone (except Stanley Crouch) is always a pleasant surprise, since Stanley Crouch is Stanley Crouch's favorite person. That being said, his saying anything nice about Barack Obama is roughly equivalent to say...Ken Adelman endorsing Barack Obama.
As far as the black community goes, I'd say we hated him but, we don't spend any time listening to him in the first place.

Fyi, HE is malfunctioning again. The "In Charge" post is not operating correctly, and it has deleted all the prior posts on the front page.

Actually, it shows that Obama knows he's venerable on the issue and is using the same strong-arm tactics he always uses.
* Flooding WGN with angry and threatening calls when they dared to have Stanley Kurtz, a reporter researching Obama's Annenberg past.
* Threatening any TV station that ran a 527 ad about Ayers with revocation of their broadcast license.
* Digging up every single piece of dirt and slime they could come up with to use against Joe the Plumber.
* Getting his opponents thrown off the ballot during his first political race.
Dissent against The Messiah will not be tolerated.

The thing is, ACORN is a voter-fraud organization. It's what they do. It's what they exist for. They aren't necessarily villianous about it, at least not any more than the Republicans are in their more subtle forms of voter supression (i.e. spreading the incorrect date to vote around poor neighborhoods) but it is what they do. The closer Obama is associated with them, the worse it gets for him - just probably not worse enough to lose at this point.

SaveFerris - I wish that were true, I sometimes wish our guys fought as dirty and mean as the GOP but this sounds like more "Holy Shit we are going lose HUGE November 4th" paranoid rantings.
You didn't care when we got fucked over in 2000 and 2004, so guess what...

Farris: "Flooding WGN with angry and threatening calls when they dared to have Stanley Kurtz, a reporter researching Obama's Annenberg past."
That's called public opinion.
"Threatening any TV station that ran a 527 ad about Ayers with revocation of their broadcast license."
I guess it's fair, when you consider the threats the Republican-owned FCC have made against war documentaries...
"Digging up every single piece of dirt and slime they could come up with to use against Joe the Plumber."
But when it's done to Kerry, it's fine and dandy.
"Getting his opponents thrown off the ballot during his first political race."
So what do you call arresting a Georgia governor for being a Dem?
Bob: "The thing is, ACORN is a voter-fraud organization. It's what they do. It's what they exist for."
Yes. Helping people of color get registed is fraudulent. Oh, and let's bring back the Grandfather Clause while we're at it.

Good move by O. The ACORN story is a "hammerhead" special; ridiculously implausible myth for extraordinarily gullible people and partisans, both of whom already support McCain. The GOP has potentially shaped the DOJ/FBI into a partisan player in the election, best to play it safe.

Gee, Josh. You're right. Someone needs to tell the Keynote Speaker at the ACORN 2006 Convention (John Sidney McCain) that these people are bad news...

Oh, little Josh, you need to get out (from the RW echo chamber) more often. Try these facts:
ANY group that collects voter registrations has to turn them all over, including those it suspects of being fraudulent. Hence, why does everyone know about the issue - because ACORN alerted them to the problem .
Now, if they were trying to pull something, shouldn't they have just thrown them alway? BTW - that's exactly how some GOP voter drives have gotten in trouble - by deliberately throwing away registrations that indicated the person wanted to be a registered Democrat.
Also, learn the difference between voter fraud and voter registration fraud, because it is a HUGE one. Voter fraud is when you try to block legitimate voters from their right to vote, by doing such things as dumping them off rolls (FL in 2000), deliberately under resourcing polls (OH in 2004) or attempting to block recently foreclosed (OH in 2008).
There's also voter intimidation (Fox News, AZ in 2004) and deliberate misinformation about change of poll venues or election dates (every election so far).
And behind all of this - paid operatives of the Republican Party, several of whom now no longer have the right to vote because they were convicted on Federal charges.
The only reason ACORN is being pushed is because the GOP has their own voter fraud plans this year and they are trying to muddy the water.
