Poke-Through

Kim Voynar's Film Essent blog is now up at Movie City News. Kim hopes "to see many of you over there getting into some great discussions on film, politics, feminist issues and what-have-you." (Somebody has to tell me what "essent" means, aside from being a re-imagined root of "essential").

I used to have an "about" section on the old Film Essent blog that explained the term "essent," but I guess I need to add that to the new site. Essent is the term used by Ralph Manheim in his (I think 1959) translation of Martin Heidegger's "Introduction to Metaphysics" as the best English equivalent for what Heidegger intended when he talked about "to be."

Essent, in other words, simply means "things that are" or "things that exist," hence "Film Essent," literally, is all things that relate to or are about film, which for me very often includes the philosophy and politics underlying particular films. I also liked that it plays nicely on the English understanding of the word "essential." And yes, it's a very geeky title for a blog, but I like it, just the same.
